Those Funny Bones! George Kirrin meets her cousins for the first time Advantages: Fun! Disadvantages: None The Famous Five series...such legendary books that I am sure my review will not do justice to them! Enid Blyton must be one of the greatest authors who ever lived and in my opinion; she can easily be classified among great Shakespeare, Bronte, Austen, and the rest. I love the Famous Five series so much that I not only devoured each book as a child, but I still re-read them even now! I have a special attachment with "Five on a Treasure Island" because ... ...somewhat spoiled tomboyish child in Five on a Treasure Island- and this image will stick through all the series. However, Enid Blyton depicts George as being a lovable character, despite all her misgivings. Any one, child or adult, can see the impact and influence of her cousins over here. By the end of this book, she is already sharing her precious island with them! "Quack!" Advantages: Lovely bed time story Disadvantages: none Farmer Duck A favourite book of mine, and one which I have read on many occasions to young children. Published in 1991,the story focuses on the hero of the story, the duck, and a lazy farmer, and on how the other animals on the farm help duck when he is too tired to keep doing all of the work. The story and illustrations The story starts by introducing us to a duck who lives with a very lazy farmer, and while the farer stays in bed all day, ... ...laden with food to the farmer who is lying in be eating chocolates and reading the newspaper. The duck looks after the cows, the sheep and the hens, and whatever job the duck does, all the farmer shouts is "How goes the work?" and each time, the duck answers "Quack!". Children very quickly realize that there is repetition going on and whenever the farmer speaks to the duck, they "Quack!" Forever - an 'out of date' teen classic Advantages: Openly and frankly explores many tenage 'issues' Disadvantages: Dated and a little over preachy First published in 1975, Forever has become one of the most well known books by teen author Judy Blume, due to the ongoing controversy surrounding it. Well known as an author who tackles teen 'issues' in her books, Blume here approaches the issues surrounding teen sex with frank openness and honesty. Even now, when sex has become a common theme of teen books, Forever stands out as being explicit and often bears warnings regarding its suitability ... ...better books out there, both for readers wanting a good story and parents wanting to give their teen children something to think about. One of my nieces favourites Advantages: really good characters Disadvantages: probably not suitable for younger children I have now got pretty much all of the roald dahl books as i read them to my neice and this is by far her favourite one. Everytime i ask her which book she wants me to read she picks this one (partly because it has animals in it) and she knows the little poem about the farmers in it off by heart. The characters in it are great but it might upset younger children a bit and it is not as light hearted as some of roald dahls other books.
