It's Much More Fun With Friends
Review of Old Bear's All - Together Painting - Jane Hissey by belfin

Advantages: Encourages working as part of a team.
Disadvantages: none

...is well known for her Old Bear stories and has written many books in this series including Jolly Tall and Little Bear. As well as these stories appearing in print, there are many DVDs in which the characters are brought to life for us. The series can also be seen on Channel 5’s Milkshake show from time to time if your little ones are up early. ***The Story*** In this Old Bear story we find him painting a picture of Little Bear to put in a frame ...
...one big frame left so Old Bear suggests that they paint one together. They all want to paint individual pictures so it is decided that Old Bear can decide whose is best and that it can go into the frame. They all decide to draw some patterns. Each friend starts off well but none of them turn out quite how they want them to. Rabbit’s stripes end up wavy because he jumps along as he paints them and Jolly Tall’s dots are too runny and end up dribbling ... Read review

Beneath Such Monsters Lies A Very Stressed Mother
Review of When Mum Turned Into A Monster - Joanna Harrison by Librelola

Advantages: A very humorously recounted story of a sad occurrence that strikes many mothers!
Disadvantages: None really

...He was about three when I found "When Mum Turned Into A Monster" on a website; I purchased it as part of a collection of books, but amazon.co.uk sell it for £4.79 for a new soft back edition. The book was written and illustrated by Joanna Harrison, who is the author of many children's books, including "Dear Bear" and "The Three Wishes". I would say that the book is directed at children aged between 4 and 8, but I started reading it to my son before ...
...the last straw is drawn when the children leave a muddy mess on the carpet, after having played with the hosepipe in the garden and eaten half the tea that Mum had worked so hard to prepare! Running up to their bedroom, which, incidentally is still as messy as ever, they hear the footsteps of their mother walking up the stairs. What follows is akin to what one may call a human explosive eruption and the illustration that portrays this is that of ... Read review

Jolly Great!
Review of Jolly Tall - Jane Hissey by Missnicks

Advantages: Colouful, magical, delightful
Disadvantages: only disadvantage is that the story itself must end!

Another wonderful tale from the excellent author and illustrator, Jane Hissey - this book is all about the arrival of a new character, and friend, for Old Bear and Co - he arrives in a rather large, interesting-looking box and all the toys are intrigued. "You must be 'Jolly Tall'.......". I first came across this book many years ago whilst on teaching practice. My class loved it and made asuperb way of introducing my nervous self to my new class ...
...book with many classes. We have used it as a basis for our work - problem solving, designing, story writing and have also enjoyed the story on many an afternoon! With its detailed and colourful illustrations and clever use of story, this book will provide you with many smiles and giggles! Its a must for any classroom - whatever age! The author is also very helpful as my class sent letters to her explaining what we had done and how they had enjoyed ... Read review

Everyone Loves their Daddy!
Review of I Love You Daddy - Jillian Harker & Kristina Stephenson by kingfisher111

Advantages: great story and illustrations
Disadvantages: none

I actually bought this very cute sounding book for my husband, so that our two daughters could give it to him on Father's Day. Although the sentiment was appreciated I have to confess that this is not really his kind of book, so unsurprisingly it soon became part of my daughters' evergrowing collection! However, they do remember that it is the book they gave Daddy, so it's always nice when Daddy gets to read his special book with them! 'I Love You, ...
...very accessible for young children. I read this to my two daughters and they really enjoy listening, but I am sure that once a child has started to learn to read, they would love curling up somewhere with this book and reading it for themselves! So overall this is a very warm cosy book which can't help but leave you with a glow after you have read it. The simple story which is easy for young children to follow coupled with the lovely illustrations ... Read review
