Frogs Will Be Frogs
Review of The Frog Prince, Continued - Jon Scieszka by
newby2
Advantages: a good story based around an old classic
Disadvantages: evil and sinister pictures
The Frog Prince continued by Jon Scieszka and paintings by Steve Johnson
Another book borrowed from the library and I feel that they will soon have no books left for Jack and I to read, as we have got through so many! This one grabbed my attention mainly because it was one I have never heard of but obviously a sequel to the very popular and well know Frog Prince.
On first inspection of this book, once I had got it home, it did appear somewhat dark ... ...nightmares, as it wasn't really the usual book I would choose for him. Every single picture is mainly brown or dark green and the drawings of the people in the story are very scary looking as they all have pointed features with bony hands. I was having my doubts as to if this book is one I should really be reading to a five month old.
Any way I gave it a go and even though Jack stared intently at every picture he didn't seem as vocal as he usually ...

"Sometimes the names are changed...
Review of Squids Will Be Squids - Jon Scieszka, Lane Smith by
ruth_cole
Advantages: Anarchic, subversive dark humour for kids.
Disadvantages: Are you kidding me?!
...to protect the not-so innocent"
For anyone who has ever plumbed the depths of children's literature (and there are some), Jon Scieszka is the kind of name that calls to you from the heavens and pulls you up into the realms of literary happiness. His darkly comic irreverent humour has lined the bookshelves of children for quite a few years now ("The Stinky Cheese Man" has just seen its tenth anniversary) but it was with total surprise that I came ... ...with Burton-esque illustrator Lane Smith, Scieszka has created a set of eighteen wickedly subversive and humanly hysterical fables for children. Working on the premise that "even thousands of years ago people were bright enough to figure out that you could gossip about anybody - as longas you changed their name to something like "Lion" or "Mouse" or "Donkey" first, Scieszka gives a heads up to Aesop and sets off along his merry way...
The only way ...

Noughts and Crosses
Review of Noughts And Crosses - Malorie Blackman by
wantaratgirl
Advantages: Lots of interesting and thoughtful plots to throw you.
Disadvantages: Can get rather slow in the middle.
I have rated this book 4/5 star. It is a deep and meaningful book all about apartheid. It is a reverse of the British apartheid in South Africa, as Sephy and Callum (main characters) live in a world where white people are second best and black people are rich and powerful. This is a very compelling book. It is not to be read if you are looking something light and cheerful. I would recommend this book to anyone in their teens to adults as it is not ...

On Cloud Nine
Review of Mr Daydream - Roger Hargreaves by
MI9to5
Advantages: Lovely character
Disadvantages: N/A
Mr Daydream is another Mr Men story from the Mr Men Collection written by Roger Hargreaves, which contains 46 books. Mr Daydream is number 13 in the series and is a pale blue cloud shaped character with a very broad grin. This is the picture of him that is one the front of the book, which is itself small square and white. Mr Daydream's name is then printed above this picture in bold block capitals. On turning the book over you can then see smaller ... ...format as all the other Mr Men stories with writing on the left hand side of the book and colourful pictures on the right. The pictures are extremely bright and cartoon like and so ensure a child's attention is captured throughout the duration of the story but the writing itself although their isn't much of it making the books great for bedtime, it can be rather small. The book itself is a story about Mr Daydream and this is exactly how the story ...

There's a What in Where?
Review of There's a Wocket in My Pocket - Dr. Seuss by
sewbizzie
Advantages: Fun, easy to read Dr Seuss Book
Disadvantages: None
There's A Wocket in my Pocket is a wonderful book from Dr Seuss. It is a yellow back book which is designed for young reader. The cover of the book is yellow with a fun picture of a boy with a funny looking green creature sticking out of his back pocket. It has a bright red border around the outside. The back cover of the book is also yellow and has a list of other books available in the yellow back collection. Not sure what the picture is which ... ...of this book so please ignore it. The story starts by asking if you ever had a feeling there was a wasket in your basket, or a nureau in your bureau? The story then goes on to move around the house with the boy and showing other rooms with funny legs or creatures hiding in place. Through out the book there is a rhyming theme and the name of the creature rhymes with the place it is hiding, for example, a jertain in the certain, a zlock behind the ...
