The Tiger who came to Tea
Review of The Tiger Who Came To Tea - Judith Kerr by
barberanna72
Advantages: Delightful bedtime story
Disadvantages: None at all.
...she absolutely loved it. The illustrations are still the same. In fact, it was read so much, we still know most of the dialoue by heart.
The story is very simple. Sophie and her mum were having tea one evening when there was a knock at the door. After failing to guess who it may be, Sophie opens the door and there is a "big, furry, stripy tiger". The tiger comes in for tea and over the next few pages eats everything on the table, in the fridge and ... ...find including "all the water in the tap".
When Daddy gets home, they tell him what has happened and he decides they must go out for tea instead. The following day, Sophie and her mum go shopping and they buy lots of food, including, a "very big tin of tiger food."
I know it sounds a bit of an odd story, but its a wonderfully simple one which delights children and is an excellent start to introducing the pleasure of reading. ...

Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake
Review of Just So Stories - Rudyard Kipling by
jillmurphy
Advantages: Funny, rhythmic, part of oral tradition.
Disadvantages: VERY old fashioned, Penguin version rather dull.
...a copy of Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories. They'll tell you all the things you need to know.
Among the simplest of myth stories are the why stories or pourquoi tales. These are stories about how things came to be. Why does night follow day? Why does spring follow winter? And how did that leopard get his spots? Most cultures across the world include why stories in their oral traditions. Different to the why stories, but still part of oral story-telling ... ...upon when he wrote the Just So Stories. So humour me just for a moment longer.
Living in India for many years and thus familiar with the forms and patterns of these traditional forms of story-telling, Kipling wrote this, his own collection of explanatory tales, in a gloriously florid and very, very funny imitation of the old way. "How The Whale Got His Throat" and "How The Leopard Got His Spots", those stories I told you about above start out seriously, ...

Forgetfulness
Review of Mog the Forgetful Cat - Judith Kerr by
neenn
Advantages: Lovely story with good rhythm and illustrations.
Disadvantages: Bit odd how the burglar is invited for a cup of tea & slightly dated fashion.
...relating to the cat:
Mog and the Vee Ee Tee
Mog's Christmas
Mog and the baby
Mog in the dark
Mog's Amazing Birthday Caper
There's also a Big Mog Tape Audio Book available which is great for the car or bedtimes if you want a break for the night!
~ The story ~
Don't be put off by the fact that this book is nearly as ancient as me!
The story is about Mog, a lovely, chubby, fluffy, tabby cat with a white tummy and white paws.
Mog belongs to ... ...Mog forgets whether cats can fly or not and whether she has had her supper and that cats have milk for breakfast so sometimes she jumps on the table and begins to eat the boiled egg much to the horror of the very refined family!
The family always tend to say "Bother that cat!" as her antics due to her forgetfulness get worse and worse.
But one night, Mog's forgetfulness saves the family..................she not surprisingly, forgets how to use ...

Out Of The Hitler Time
Review of Out of the Hitler Time - Judith Kerr by
fizzz
Advantages: Extremely well written and enjoyable read.
Disadvantages: none
Out Of The Hitler Time is the compilation of what was originally three separate books written by Judith Kerr:
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit
The Other Way Round
A Small Person Far Away
These three books together follow one family’s story during and after World War Two. The books are based on Judith Kerr’s own experiences, as she tells us in a short piece at the end of the book.
The family in question is a German Jewish family, Anna, her elder ... ...flight in the early 1930s from Germany, first to Switzerland then France and finally ending up in Britain. The second book covers the time of the war, with the family in Britain, and the third book tells us of their life afterwards when the children have grown up and made their own lives.
The book is written from Anna’s own point of view, which I found extremely interesting as it gave a running commentary of how life felt for someone in her position ...

Three little pigs--Oink Oink!!
Review of The Three Little Pigs - Steven Kellogg by
liana3030
Advantages: A must read. An engaging story with a moral. Good pictures.
Disadvantages: None
The three little pigs is one of the must reads to children. When I was a young girl I was initially read to and later used to read myself this story over and over again. The story goes like this-- A mummy pig had 3 little ones. The story begins with mummy pig asking the 3 little pigs to go forth and find new homes. She sends them of with a word of advice. The three pigs set off to find them new homes. As they walk along they meet a man carrying some ... ...a house made of straw. The 2 other little pigs continue their journey and come across a guy with sticks, which the second pig asks for himself and goes on to build his house of sticks. The third little pig continues along and finds a guy with bricks and uses the bricks to build his fine house.
Then along comes the wolf who huffs and puffs and blows down the first 2 houses. Then he comes to the third house but unfortunately for him it is too strong. ...
