Holes
Review of Holes - Louis Sachar by xXxgr8galxXx

Advantages: It's a brilliant book for all ages
Disadvantages: The cover could be better

I really liked this book! It kept you interested in it straight away and all the way through. The story line was very easy to follow and a very, very cleaver story line. My teacher read it to my class a few years ago and I enjoyed it so much I want out to the shops, bought it, and read it myself! I liked the book so much I went into town and bought the DVD starring Shia LaBeouf as Stanley Yelnats. I also really like that film, and also helped me ... Read review

a fantastic twist on a traditional fairy tale
Review of Seriously Silly Stories Collection - Laurence Anholt by deeleybopper

Advantages: witty, laugh out loud, loved by children
Disadvantages: wish they were colour pictures

If you want a great story or set of stories to read, to children 6 and above, then I can highly recommend these books. fabulously written by Laurence Anholt, these stories take well known and loved fairy tales, and twist them on their head, giving a great contemporary twist. and they are great value for money - very affordable with pocket money. for example...in Little Red Riding Wolf, the villan of the story is NOT the wolf, but its the big bad ...
...animals of the forest, and she loves nothing better than picking on our hero - Wolfie...or as the author calls him "cutesy wolfie cub!" my class of 6 and 7 year olds absolutely howled and roared with this story, and let out an almighty cheer when the hero of the story changes the big bad girlie for the better. and the hat the wolf wears had me in hysterics too! The pictures are truly brilliant - I can compare it to the simspons in that you look ... Read review

YOU DIRTY RAT!
Review of That Pesky Rat - Lauren Child by daisydaisym

Advantages: Great story, great pictures, brilliant for ALL ages
Disadvantages: None

...bookshop, and despite the fact that I don't have any kids as yet, I do have all of her picture books! 'That Pesky Rat' is one of my favourites, and one that I recommend a lot at work. It won the Smarties Book Prize in 2002. It is a picture book, but with a great story too, recommended for the ages of 4 upwards. The story centres around, and is told by, a poor little rat. He is very sociable but no human seems to want to know him. From his home ...
...their pets, and he wishes that he was someone's pet too - what he wants most of all is a name - but all anyone ever says is "that pesky rat!" He asks the other pets' advice, and he even asks the lady who owns the pet shop, but she doesn't seem to think that brown rats are very popular right now! Poor rat, will he ever find a home? The story is very sweet and very funny, and I love Lauren Child's style, just the right mix of happy, sad, and funny. ... Read review

Do you remember your first wobbly tooth?
Review of My Wobbly Tooth Must Not Ever Never Fall Out - Lauren Child by kingfisher111

Advantages: fun story and pictures
Disadvantages: none!

...do not ever NEVER want my wobbly tooth to fall out. I need it!' Charlie and his friend Marv try to explain what it is like to have a tooth fall out and the fact that the baby teeth need to go to make way for the grown up ones. Marv says it's like mooses getting new antlers. Lola is not happy about this likeness at all and states very firmly - 'But I am not a moose!' However, Lola's attitude about wanting to keep her wobbly tooth for ever starts ...
...always bring a smile to my face, particularly as I can almost hear my daughter saying the same sorts of words. I really think that Lauren Child has an ear for the way children speak and she replicates this so well. There are also many things that you start to recognise once you have read a few Charlie and Lola books. These include the wonderful illustrations on every page - sometimes hand drawn pictures mixed with occasional photos. A lot of the ... Read review
