YOU DIRTY RAT!
Advantages: Great story, great pictures, brilliant for ALL ages Disadvantages: None
...bookshop, and despite the fact that I don't have any kids as yet, I do have all of her picture books!
'That Pesky Rat' is one of my favourites, and one that I recommend a lot at work. It won the Smarties Book Prize in 2002. It is a picture book, but with a great story too, recommended for the ages of 4 upwards.
The story centres around, and is told by, a poor little rat. He is very sociable but no human seems to want to know him. From his home ... ...their pets, and he wishes that he was someone's pet too - what he wants most of all is a name - but all anyone ever says is "that pesky rat!" He asks the other pets' advice, and he even asks the lady who owns the pet shop, but she doesn't seem to think that brown rats are very popular right now! Poor rat, will he ever find a home?
The story is very sweet and very funny, and I love Lauren Child's style, just the right mix of happy, sad, and funny. ...

Clarice Bean Spells Trouble - very good book.
Advantages: awesome book to read :) Disadvantages: not for my age group :P
...book we came across the Clarice Bean Series (Utterly me Clarice Bean, Clarice Bean Spells Trouble and Don't Look Know and Clarice Bean Don't Look now). My sister had already been a fan of Charlie and Lola so we were familiar with the work of Lauren Child and decided to take the first two books. Clarice Bean is an ordinary girl who always seems to get in trouble without trying. In this book she tries to get a role in the school play and impress her ... ...trouble yet again. Clarice is a character you will totally love after reading the book, she is funny, charming and witty and her outlook on life is certainly... different. I also think many children will be able to relate to Clarice in their own difficulties because in life (and the book) life isn't always fair. The illustrations are always fun and unique and give the book that extra charm. This book is easy to read and I would recommend to ages ...

A puzzling book!
Advantages: a fun book Disadvantages: none
...happy hours makingand re-making these. I'm very impressed with the quality of the puzzles particularly because they fit back into the pages perfectlywhich does not always happen with the other jigsaw books we have.
This is an excellent book to share with young children and I would say that three is probably the optimum age. The story is one they can relate to and the puzzles are well with in their range. Above all though, it's a story about Charlie ...

Are You Afraid Of The Big Bad Wolf?
Advantages: Ingenious slant on the favourite fairy stories Disadvantages: none
***Background***
Most parents will be aware of Lauren Child these days, or at the least the characters, Charlie and Lola, that she has made household names with our children. She has also written and illustrated many other storybooks too and this is one of those.
***The Story***
The story begins with a little boy called Herb, being read a bedtime story by his mother. "Sometimes it was about a big wolf who terrified little girls and their grandmothers ... ...You could tell from the picture that toothpaste had never been on his shopping list."
This is Herb's favourite story and he loves the picture on the back of the book with a wolf that has an eye patch. Herb insists that his mother take the book downstairs every night because he is scared of the storybook wolves but one night she forgets and the story continues with the appearance of the storybook wolves turning up in Herb's bedroom.
This is very ...

My pink milk tastes green...
Advantages: Great characters and superb illustrations Disadvantages: Challenging for very young independent readers
Poor little Lola is tucked up in bed with a cold, but big brother Charlie brings her a tray of her favourite pink milk and some biscuits. Today, however, Lola says the milk tastes green and the biscuits are 'too prickly to swallow'. Charlie tries to cheer her up with flowers, but they simply make Lola sneeze. She can't join in a song with Charlie because her throat hurts, but she begs her brother to sing for her. Charlie is in a quandary because ... ...He doesn't want to break his promise, but Lola tugs at his heartstrings so he tries 'If you're happy and you know it, clap your hands.' Lola, however, doesn't clap because, as she says, 'I'm really ever so not well.' Charlie takes Lola to the bathroom to see her cold germs in the mirror. She reckons there must be 54 billion, or even a trillion of them. Charlie gets a phone call from Marv and tells Lola that Mum will come and play with her as he is ...
