Fabulous Fairy Tales
Review of The Three Little Pigs and Other Stories: A Lift-the-flap Fairy Tale Collection - Stephen Tucker, Nick Sharratt by
historywitch
Advantages: Sturdy, bright, ideal for a wide age range
Disadvantages: None!
I am always on the look out for new books for my daughter (and myself of course) and as she is fond of lift the flap books this one caught my eye last time I was browsing Amazon. I had not come across the author before but it was on special offer so I duly ordered it and waited impatiently for it to arrive (my postman must hate me, I must give him a hernia everytime he delivers!).
I pulled it out of its packaging and discovered an absolute gem that ... ...flap fairy tale book, containing the stories of the Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk and the Billy Goats Gruff written and illustrated by Nick Sharratt and Stephen Tucker.
***********The Author*******************
Nick Sharratt has illustrated the Jacqueline Wilson books and the Daisy series, as well as an impressive number of other books and book covers, so the name and the drawing style may be familiar to anyone who watches Tracey Beaker ...

Fast or Slow?
Review of Faster, Faster! Nice and Slow! - Nick Sharratt by
neenn
Advantages: A great book about opposites, brightly illustrated.
Disadvantages: None
I bought this book for the nursery children in my school when I was assigned a task of discussing opposites.
♠♠♠ The book ♠♠♠
This book is a simple introduction to opposites, explained by a little boy and girl, Nick and Sue.
The two characters begin by introducing themselves. They introduce a range of opposites which I shall outline below:
‘We’re up above’ ….. ‘We’re down below’.
For this double page spread, ... ...and in a submarine for down below.
‘ A noisy dog’…… ‘A quiet cat’.
Nick has the boisterous noisy dog out for a walk, whilst Sue is sitting calmly on a large chair with a sleeping cat on her knee.
‘This road’s bumpy’……. ‘This road’s flat’.
Sue is driving a car (odd when she’s only about 5 years old, but we won’t go there!) on a very bumpy, hilly road, whilst Nick is driving a car on a flat road.
Get the picture??
The book takes this format with ...

Ketchup on your Cornflakes?
Review of Ketchup On Your Cornflakes? - Nick Sharratt by
Testarossa
Advantages: Funny
Disadvantages: none
...bowl of cereal, and a ketchup bottle pouring ketchup onto the cereal. Welcome to “Ketchup on your cornflakes?” by Nick Sharratt.
I looked at the book, and flicked through the pages. All the pages are split into 2 width ways, with a picture on the top page, and a different picture on the bottom page. There are about 4 words on each of the top and bottom pages.
“Don’t you think this is a bit young for you James?” I asked.
“No!” Came the reply.
... ...“But I want it.”
“It’s a bit babyish.”
“No it isn’t its fun.”
“Hmm, OK then.” I relented, and bought the book.
James clutched the book tightly in his little mitts all the way home. I was sure he would be so disappointed with it when he finally got to read it.
At home, we sat down to read. Amy at one end of the sofa, curled up with her new Jacqueline Wilson book, and James and me at the other end to read “Ketchup on your cornflakes?”
The background ...

A modern version.
Review of The Three Billy Goats Gruff - Nick Sharratt by
neenn
Advantages: Good rhyming text and lift-the-flap opportunities.
Disadvantages: Some may miss the chant of "Who's the trip-trapping over MY bridge"
♠♠♠ The book ♠♠♠
This is a re-telling of the traditional story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. In my youth I was a big fan of the traditional tale and particularly enjoyed the chant of “Who’s that trip-trapping over MY bridge”….however this book doesn’t use that chant but is still an enjoyable re-telling of the tale.
The story is cleverly told in rhyme, the second page of which I have shown below to give you ... ...could be.
“It’s time,” said the youngest “to cross the red bridge”
And his brothers just had to agree.
What brave billy goats! For each of them knew that under the bridge in a shack
Lived a horrible troll who kept watch all the time,
And goat was his favourite snack.’
As the traditional tale goes, the smallest billy goat crosses the bridge but the troll leaps out…. The clever young goat tempts the troll by saying:
“Oh please, Mr Troll, don’t ...
