Where the Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendack
Review of Where the Wild Things Are - Maurice Sendak by
supermumoftwo
Advantages: Well written and beautifully illustrated.
Disadvantages: none
This was my all time favourite book as a child and I have shared this book with both my sons. My brother has also shared this book with his daughter as he could remember how imaginative the book is. It is a fabulous book for encouraging childrens imagination. As a child I loved dreaming of being the King of the Wild Things and of travelling to the far off land. I have used it with my children to encourage their creative ideas. The illustrations are ...

Racial problems in an inverted Britain
Review of Noughts And Crosses - Malorie Blackman by
liamsingh
Advantages: Excellent, hard-to-put-down reading
Disadvantages: None!
...in a series of four, Noughts and Crosses has two different classes of characters. One group are the noughts, who are white, and are treated by Crosses as inferior. Crosses have more money, better education and better healthcare than noughts, and are the ruling class in society. Callum McGregor is a nought. Sephy Hadley is a Cross, and she is the daughter or the Deputy Prime Minister. Callum and Sephy have been friends for many years, but pressure ... ...in, which was equality between noughts and Crosses. He joins the Liberation Militia, a group of "freedom fighters" who use political terrorism to achieve their goals. The story starts at the Hadley's house, a few years before the main plot. Young children Sephy and Callum are playing happily in the garden, seemingly immune to the bitter and hate-filled world around them. Meggie McGregor works for Jasmine Hadley, but is fired from her job when she ...

It's a dog thing.
Review of Kipper the Dog (Series) - Mick Inkpen by
DylanD
Advantages: Lovely illustrated stories
Disadvantages: Some books can be pricey
The Kipper story collection is the large colourful paperback book of the moment in our house this week. A great find from our local Ottakers bookshop retailing for £7.99 though you can purchase it from Amazon for £6.99. Having watched the Kipper series on Nick Jnr, both my son and myself fell in love with this rather lovable cute little dog and his adventures.
The kipper story collection is written and illustrated by Mick Inkpen and contains four ... ...Hodder children's book. The kipper books are very easy to read and children and parents alike will love reading them. Kipper books come in several formats and aimed at babies pre school ranges. Kippers Story collection is a great book that any child with love and with its simple stories and scenarios which come with a moral to each story, will be a classic read that you will never tire of reading.
Kipper himself is a very lovable Brown and White ...

A modern classic.
Review of Goodnight Mister Tom - Michelle Magorian by
anaglypta
Advantages: Great story and characters
Disadvantages: No wizards, so you might have to persude non-bookish kids to read it
I bought this book for my godson as an Xmas present recently, I had been itching to do so as soon as I thought he would be able to read it. This was my absolute favourite book as a child.
The storyline is set in the early years of the Second World War, and the main character is an evacuee to the countryside. This aspect of the Second World War always interests children as it is about them. The main character, William, is an abused and undernourished ... ...insane mother. He finds himself in the care of Thomas Oakley, a retired country man who has led a secluded and reclusive life since his wife and son died in childbirth. William makes his first ever friends in the country, and forms a very strong relationship with a Jewish boy of the same age called Zach.
William, with the help of everyone in the village, especially Tom and Zach, blossoms and discovers a talent for art, quickly catching up educationally ...

Hunting Down A Classic!
Review of We're Going on a Bear Hunt - Michael Rosen by
carlyhodder
Advantages: Large font and simple wording
Disadvantages: None
This book is a timeless classic that I, myself, enjoyed as a child and am now sharing that experience with my daughter. We read it at least five times every single day at the moment and even at the young age of 17 months old she copies all the sounds and stomps along with the characters to find the bear. Then she dives for cover once he's found and we have a jolly good laugh as we run for cover! It is one of those stories that ensures so much fun ... ...child from 12 months up will surely enjoy this book but is probably more popular with school age children who are just beginning to read. It is the perfect starter book with it's large font and simple, repetititve words... simply beautiful. I orginally purchased this book in paperback at our local supermarket as an extra birthday present for my daughter, it soon became her favourite story and after 4 months has not let up yet. Recently though I discovered ...
