Originally written by Aleksei Tolstoy, The Gigantic Turnip is a marvellous tale that is simplistic as a story, but becomes quite meaningful when you delve a little deeper. The lion sleeps tonight

Advantages: Soothing words and illustrations

This is a lovely and peaceful bedtime book for kids, with a slightly different angle on things to the usual books. Written by Claire Freedman and illustrated by Tina Macnaughton, it takes place on the African plains, and goes from animal to animal as they try to get their young ones off to sleep. We see lions, procupines, antelope, leopards, various birds and other such animals, with the wording on the pages minimal and the theme solid all the way ...
...to read it out slower, and in a very gentle fashion. It starts off with a pleasant air about it, and this slowly descends into a sleepier feel to the book, and while each turn of the page gives you different animals and slightly different wording, the constant intention of getting little ones to go to sleep paints quite a vivid picture. Mrs Large has a bit of a paddy! Stand clear!

Advantages: Great kids story, especially at bedtime
