Pullman reveals the trump card!!!
Review of His Dark Materials III: The Amber Spyglass - Philip Pullman by
pmcds
Advantages: Brilliant end to a brilliant trilogy. Short chapters: ideal stopping places
Disadvantages: Much longer than the others. Very descriptive in the middle.
A little short of amonth ago, I woke up on Christmas morning and opened my presents. One of these was Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy. I had eagerly awaited these (guessing I would get them for Christmas) and tucked into them immediately.
The first two in the trilogy, namely 'Northern Lights' and 'The Subtle Knife', leave you thristy for more. Pullman creates a fantastic tale over the course of the trilogy, leaving the reader needing ... ...first two books, over 500 pages long, and at points in the middle, it seems to drag slightly.I found myself pushing through long descriptive paragraphs without incidences of conversation to break up the monotony. These descriptions were integral to the plot, as is everything, but I felt Pullman was close to going off at a tangent in these parts.
Pullman touches heavily on the religious nature of the books in this third and final installment. I had ...

Advantages: excellent storyline
Disadvantages:
...her whole life and as the book unfolds she finds out a lot of truths about herself. She finds out about her mother, that she has a half brother, her dad spent a short period of time in jail and that her grandparents are horible people. As the book goes on Ginny leans these things and runs out of people to turn to. But in the end she discovers that her dad, who she has completely lost faith in, is the only true person in her life.
This is a fantastic ...

A Captivating Time Capsule
Review of Lyra's Oxford - Philip Pullman by
amytheduck
Advantages: Beautifully Presented
Disadvantages: Very short
Lyra's Oxford is a short book by Philip Pullman, the author of the popular trilogy "His Dark Materials" (HDM). Lyra's Oxford continues the story of HDM, picking up a couple of years after the third book in the series ended.
It's a lovely little book, containing not only the story, as I will explain a little later.
**Cover**
The book is a lot smaller than your normal novella, it could almost be described as pocket sized. Cloth-bound in red, with ... ...the Birds', and tells of Lyra's encounter with a witch's daemon. Daemon's, for those who don't know, are physical manifestation's of a person's soul, and take the form of an animal. Witches daemon's are always birds, hence the title.
The story is a delightful little adventure for Lyra, taking place (as the title suggests), in Oxford. It provides avid readers of HDM with a small glimpse into Lyra's future, something which fans of the books definitely ...

An excellent piece of Victorian drama
Review of The Ruby in the Smoke - Philip Pullman by
rosieemma91
Advantages: Fast paced, authentic and gripping.
Disadvantages: Complicated plot requires time and patience to unravel
This is the first of the series of Sally Lockhart books Philip Pullman has written.
The cover shown with the description is the newer one which was released after the TV adaptation was aired on the BBC. It stars Billie Piper as Sally and was a massive success, hence the new bookcover. However, I will include a picture of the more common old cover with this review so you don't miss it in the shops!!
The original cover is in keeping with the book's ... ...by David Hopkins. Also on the original cover is the name of the author and the book (obviously!) along with the phrase 'A GRIPPING MYSTERY FROM THE DEPTHS OF VICTORIAN LONDON' which I believe sums up this book pretty accurately. There is also a positive review from the Observer.
The story itself is following Sally Lockhart, an orphan who until recently had lived with her Father, who was a shipping agent. However, his ship went missing at sea and ...
