Diamond review  Refugee Boy

Advantages: Moving and sensitively written; a timely response to our very public issues of asylum seekers.
Disadvantages: None.

...devastating opening of Benjamin Zephaniah's Refugee Boy. The first two chapters are identical but for the setting and the parent, and without any further explanation of the conflict we immediately understand the plight of 14 year old Alem, the son of this family, who is both Ethiopian and Eritrean, who loves both his parents and both their countries, who is in terrible danger and unwelcome no matter where he goes. Alem's father brings him to England ...
...a strange land. The Refugee Council and the Home Office come into play, and Alem finds himself learning about British justice as much as British life. This is both a tragic and a positive tale. Zephaniah presents his characters in perhaps too much of a positive light (I'll come back to this in a minute), but they are realistic. Everyone is trying their best to deal with the situation at hand and in their own way. Alem makes the effort to learn as ...

Take the hen for a walk...

Advantages: Great early learning book
Disadvantages: Don't read it too often...not alot of mileage

I have read this book so many times to different children and they tend to love it! THE STORY "Rosie the hen goes for a walk". The first page starts it off in the style of the whole book...simple but effective. Rosie is a chubby little hen who I always imagine to be a bit of a busybody, and off she goes for a walk... unbeknown to her, she is being followed by a big bad fox! So there she goes quite oblivious to the fact that she is being followed, ...
...of her journey shows her going "across the yard" (yes, those are the only words!), and then when you turn the page, boing, the fox stands on a garden fork which hits him in the face. This is the format of the whole book; a double page telling us where Rosie goes next and then a double page with no text, just a picture of the mishaps befalling the fox, whilst Rosie walks contentedly on. After going "across the yard, around the pond, over the haycock, ...

A great book for young readers

Advantages: easy to read
Disadvantages: none

...trapped inside it. This is Ruby and she explains how they must help her to find her sisters (the other rainbow fairies). The girls have lots of fun on there holiday and agree to help find the rainbow fairies, but they must keep it a secret. This is a great story and has helped my 7 year old daughter on her way to being a fluent and confident young reader. The story is very interesting and it keeps her gripped at all times. The story is broken down ...
...the book to break up the text. This book has 73 pages. These books are widely available from many retailers, we got this one from WH Smiths for 3.99 I would recommend this book to any young reader, to help them become more confident reading on their own or to others. The book is laid out in a way that is not intimidating to an early reader. I find that just the look of some books can put off my daughter from reading them on her own, but not this ...

Something for everyone

Advantages: A good plot
Disadvantages: Catagorized as a childs book

This was one of my sisters books that I couldn't resist reading. I was intrigued by the name and it seemed to look pretty decent from the cover. I was really into this book by the time it got going. You follow a character called Matt that always seems to be in trouble, he's lost his parents and lives with his aunt that really doesn't seem to care at all. After yet another crime, Matt is caught by the police and questioned. He is then told he will ...
...on the right path. He's taken to the country, where everyone seems simple and incredibly boring. But Matt finds out this is most certainly not the case. As he works at he farm for an evil woman and her idiotic side kick, he finds that life in Yorkshire is not what meets the eye, and people he thinks are his friends are infact under the bewitching eye of the town and helping Matt figure out what is going on, is bad for their health. If you or your ...

The Hell where youth and laughter go!

Advantages: A poignant, thought provoking story of becoming an adult in WW1.
Disadvantages: A bit graphic in places...make sure you have a tissue handy!

...my latest book review. Remembrance by Theresa Breslin was recommended to me by a number of friends ~ they said I would enjoy it and that it needed to be reviewed to encourage others to read and (hopefully) enjoy it too. I borrowed a copy from work and settled down to read….a few hours later and I had gone through a whole gammit of emotions and completed a wonderful book. ~~~THE AUTHOR. Theresa Breslin is a librarian who lives in Lenzie in Scotland. ...
...As I said before, Remembrance is set in World War One. The initial setting is the small Scottish village of Stratharden in 1915 and the story revolves around a group of five teenagers from two families. They come from different social backgrounds, but the insular nature of the community has meant that they have grown up together and their lives are linked. The War has been going on around them for a while, but they it hasn’t really had much of an ...
