So, What DO people Do All day?
Review of What Do People Do All Day? - Richard Scarry by Shroud

Advantages: fun and educational, find out all about dfferent jobs and how they affect the community
Disadvantages: none really

...including 1968's most famous entry, What do People do All Day? A very private person, not much more is really known about Richard Scarry, other than by his works. He was quite prolific, having completed over 300 works, and was married to children's writer and fellow Golden Book author Patricia and they have a son, Richard Scarry Jr (also known as Huck after one of his most famous Busy Town characters) who also illustrates for children. In 1972 Richard ...
...~~~~The book and what Mommy thinks~~~ As its title suggests, the book is about what people do all day. Since different people all do different things, the book covers a lot of topics. The first section looks at Busy Town itself along the high street. This book truly shines with some of the best examples of Scarry's illustrations, as we see the town above ground, and below ground in intricate detail. We see the men digging tunnels and the underground ... Read review

Skimming Stones Through The Still Water
Review of Waving Not Drowning - Rosie Rushton by JayHall1991

Advantages: Dark, Interesting Subjects, Surprisingly Deep For A Book Aimed At Teens
Disadvantages: Not The Greatest Writing, A Tad Slow, Could Of Been So Much More

Waving Not Drowning is the intricate and engrossing story of three teenagers in desperate need of help. Fiona (Fee) seems to have everything, a famous heart throb for a dad, a powerful political figurehead for a mother and a flourishing social life, but behind the happy and shining exterior she is masking years of pain, hiding a terrible life of abuse and torment mainly from her father, a back stabbing and childish sex addict. Finally, after fourteen ...
...which I thought was great Waving Not drowning, and reading the book, I realised how fitting it truly is for this deep story. This is about people who need help, but don't feel they can ask the people around them for it, which is why I think all teen's should read it, because it does manage to convey some poignant, important and heart breaking issues and points in an accessible and entertaining way. First of all this is an incredibly brave book as ... Read review

The timeless schoolboy scruff
Review of William the Detective - Richmal Crompton by JOHNV

Advantages: Escapist fun, to dip into and enjoy over and over again
Disadvantages: Today's children might find the humour dated

Richmal Crompton wrote 38 William books, mostly short stories. 'William – the Detective' was the 17th, first published in 1935. At this stage of her career, Richmal Crompton’s output was phenomenal. She wrote and published at least one new book of William stories (around 10-12 per volume) every year, although she regarded them as potboilers and longed to be recognised for her adult novels, now virtually forgotten. (Would she have considered ...
...decide to become ‘Nasties’, with William as ‘Him Hitler’ and try to lock up Mr Isaacs, a much-disliked Jewish shopkeeper. Then they find that they have apprehended a burglar by mistake, while the bound and gagged Mr Isaacs is grateful to them for having rescued him. This story was soon seen as in bad taste, though it can be argued that Crompton was making fun of the Nazis. (In another William book of the time, she has a story ... Read review

I can count!
Review of Count on Goz - Steve Weatherill by danielalong

Advantages: Lovely way to start to count
Disadvantages: None

Count On Goz by Steve Weatherill A great way for very young children to be introduced to counting up to 5 and to learn about number formation. Children do tend to enjoy lift the flap books, so it's almost certainly going to be a winner. Many children will already be familiar with Goz, the appealing yellow gosling. This time, we meet Goz in the early morning, near the river when everything is quiet. A little yellow goose is bottoms up... "Who's ...
...as developing an ability to count and recognise numbers to 5. The simple text means that it is suitable for National Curriculum Reading, because children can easily see and be encouraged to point out capital letters, full stops and question marks. Because the animals are easily distinguishable, even if they can't read the words, they can be encouraged to use picture clues. A useful book for very young children who are beginning to count.
