A Hop a stick and a jump
Advantages: fun to read Disadvantages: a lot going on
...style of writing.
We saw Stick Man in the library so we added it to our pile. I think this week it has been the most well read book in our house.
Stick Man is yes you guessed it a stick. Unlike any other stick he is about to go on a journey through the book trying to find his way home to his “family tree”.
The book starts when stick man leaves his tree to go for a jog, but soon gets chased by a dog. Escaping from the dog, poor stick man is accosted ... ...to a sandcastle isn’t what stick man wanted to do when he washed up on the beach, but as he frees himself from that predicament, poor stickman finds himself freezing in the snow as the seasons change. Ending up on the fire waiting to be lit, it seems that stick man really has met his fate, until rescue comes in the form of Santa Claus, who returns stick man to his family tree in response to stick man freeing Santa Claus from the chimney above the ...

Sleepovers
Advantages: Funny Disadvantages: Short
Sleepovers is a really good book written by Jacqueline Wilson for young girls from the ages of 9-14. It is about a young girl called Daisy who you can feel involved with, she makes friends through sleepovers and birthday parties. It is a typical group of girls including the bossy, shy, fat and mean one which will make you involved as you understand what it can be like. This makes it really funny and will get you wanting more! I read it when i was ...

Swallows And Amazons - not for Duffers
Advantages: Heart warming, endearing, beautiful descriptive writing Disadvantages: Younger readers could struggle with long description and technical sailing terms
Swallows and Amazons - Arthur Ransome
~~~Setting~~~
Swallows and Amazons was written in 1930, an adventure story aimed at children and the first of a series of 12 novels for which their author is most well known. Set in the Lake District, it follows the adventures during one summer holiday of the Swallows (brothers and sisters John, Susan, Titty and Roger) as they camp on an island of adventure, make enemies and then friends with the Amazon pirates ... ...as it is because the Swallows and Amazons create a world of piracy and adventure. The exchanges between mother and children are so gentle, with so much mutual respect, it really is heart warming, and so far from the fevered and noisy exchanges in our house! Oh to be like this family!
The prose is very enjoyable. The descriptions of Lakeland are truly evocative, so if you have a love of this part of the world, as did the author, you will enjoy reading ...
