Take me away!
Review of The Snail and the Whale - Axel Scheffler, Julia Donaldson by
watkins11
Advantages: Fun and easy to read, colourful, beautiful illustrations
Disadvantages: Absolutely none!
As say the opening lines of this wonderful book: This is the tale of a tiny snail. And a great big, grey-blue humpback whale......
I think most people are aware of the Gruffalo, especially those with children, but for those who need a little introduction, The Gruffalo is the book which shot Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler to fame back in March 1999. Julia's beautiful, flowing words were accompanied by Axels stunning, colourful and exciting illustrations. ... ...Since then we have read the Gruffalo's Child and Monkey Puzzle. Both of which are wonderful, but, for me, The Snail & The Whale has clinched it. In this story, a brave little snail, very aware of his smallness, embarks on an adventure with a friendly, gentle whale. With each page you visit scary, beautiful, cold & sunny far off lands, until one day, the unthinkable happens, and the little snail must overcome his insecurities to help his friend. Julia ...

Fabulous Fairy Tales
Review of The Three Little Pigs and Other Stories: A Lift-the-flap Fairy Tale Collection - Stephen Tucker, Nick Sharratt by
historywitch
Advantages: Sturdy, bright, ideal for a wide age range
Disadvantages: None!
I am always on the look out for new books for my daughter (and myself of course) and as she is fond of lift the flap books this one caught my eye last time I was browsing Amazon. I had not come across the author before but it was on special offer so I duly ordered it and waited impatiently for it to arrive (my postman must hate me, I must give him a hernia everytime he delivers!).
I pulled it out of its packaging and discovered an absolute gem that ... ...flap fairy tale book, containing the stories of the Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk and the Billy Goats Gruff written and illustrated by Nick Sharratt and Stephen Tucker.
***********The Author*******************
Nick Sharratt has illustrated the Jacqueline Wilson books and the Daisy series, as well as an impressive number of other books and book covers, so the name and the drawing style may be familiar to anyone who watches Tracey Beaker ...

"Only children know what they are looking for"
Review of The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupery by
tazzywazzy
Advantages: Remembering the truth
Disadvantages: Adults have forgotten the truth
...stoopid Tazzy ramblings and onto the good stuff...the review, I have decided to re-write my first ever review, I really did not do the book any justice the first time round, so here goes!
~Gather round children, you might learn something new~
This is undoubtedly the most famous piece of work by the French author Antoine de Saint-Exupery, and although a children's novel has a lot of underlying, very adult, messages about perception, love, relationships ... ...the younger readers. This little book has been translated into about 160 different languages, sold over 50 million copies, think it was made into an opera a couple of years ago, and has even had it's own anime series (spanning 39 episodes).
Saint Exupery's love in life was being a pilot, but he was forced by his fiancée's family to take a desk job in Paris, which he did, but eventually their engagement was called off, and he returned to flying. ...

The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, by John Boyne
Review of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - John Boyne by
Book_Junkie
Advantages: easy to read
Disadvantages: sad, historical inaccuracies
...that it was worth all the hype surrounding it.
The book, which is set during World War II, tells the story of Bruno, a 9 year old German boy, who is dismayed when he has to leave his home in Berlin to move to 'Out-With', where his father has been given a job by the 'Fury'.
Bruno does not understand why there is a huge fence at Out-With, behind which 100s of people in striped pyjamas live, who he is not allowed to associate with.
However, Bruno ... ...only end in disaster.
The book is told from the point of view of Bruno, so it is easy for adults to see past his naive views of the world, and sense impending doom, where Bruno is unable to see it.
One thing that did bother me about the writing was that Bruno's mis-understanding and mis-pronouncing of words such as Out-With and the Fury, would not actually in the language in which Bruno would be speaking, i.e., German; they work in English only, ...
