Dreams are not always what they seem
Review of The Dream Master - Theresa Breslin by Mauri

Advantages: well written, engaging story
Disadvantages: Difficult for younger children to read on their own

...she has become one of the most prolific children’s fiction authors around. Her work is easily distinguishable by the way she makes the child the centre of the story in a believable way. Her outlook is childlike and this makes her stories very engaging especially for younger readers. Her books seem to comprise all the essential ingredients for successful child fiction. The heroes are often children that are slightly marginalized in their own lives ...
...is also a familiarity about the settings, average households, average schools in average towns but inevitably these ‘ordinary’ children find a way to have extraordinary magical adventures. THE DREAM MASTER We are told the story of Cy an ordinary boy living in an ordinary town. When Cy sleeps like millions of other small boys, he dreams of exciting adventures in far away places. One day he wakes from a dream about ancient Egypt with the feeling ... Read review

The Hell where youth and laughter go!
Review of Remembrance - Theresa Breslin by tange

Advantages: A poignant, thought provoking story of becoming an adult in WW1.
Disadvantages: A bit graphic in places...make sure you have a tissue handy!

...my latest book review. Remembrance by Theresa Breslin was recommended to me by a number of friends ~ they said I would enjoy it and that it needed to be reviewed to encourage others to read and (hopefully) enjoy it too. I borrowed a copy from work and settled down to read….a few hours later and I had gone through a whole gammit of emotions and completed a wonderful book. ~~~THE AUTHOR. Theresa Breslin is a librarian who lives in Lenzie in Scotland. ...
...As I said before, Remembrance is set in World War One. The initial setting is the small Scottish village of Stratharden in 1915 and the story revolves around a group of five teenagers from two families. They come from different social backgrounds, but the insular nature of the community has meant that they have grown up together and their lives are linked. The War has been going on around them for a while, but they it hasn’t really had much of an ... Read review

I can count!
Review of Count on Goz - Steve Weatherill by danielalong

Advantages: Lovely way to start to count
Disadvantages: None

Count On Goz by Steve Weatherill A great way for very young children to be introduced to counting up to 5 and to learn about number formation. Children do tend to enjoy lift the flap books, so it's almost certainly going to be a winner. Many children will already be familiar with Goz, the appealing yellow gosling. This time, we meet Goz in the early morning, near the river when everything is quiet. A little yellow goose is bottoms up... "Who's ...
...as developing an ability to count and recognise numbers to 5. The simple text means that it is suitable for National Curriculum Reading, because children can easily see and be encouraged to point out capital letters, full stops and question marks. Because the animals are easily distinguishable, even if they can't read the words, they can be encouraged to use picture clues. A useful book for very young children who are beginning to count. The amazing Terry does it again!
Review of The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents - Terry Pratchett by atytyut2434

Advantages: Talking Rats!
Disadvantages: A Trombone with keys

...from lack of food. The rats are great characters and their gradual discovery that the book they thought was factual is a childrens story. A mayors curious daughter who spends her time searching for stories that she is sure must exist. This book has a great outcome, a brilliant match of who is the greatest Rat Piper with Keith managing to win using a trombone (which has keys if you own a 1st edition but has been corrected to not having keys in later ... Advantages: Delightful story and illustrations
Disadvantages: Only available in hardback at time of writing - expensive

...talent to fulfil her ambition. Noko's Surprise Party is her latest picture book and is a follow-up to Noko and the Night Monster. As Takadu the aardvark and Noko the porcupine have been friends for so long, it is only natural that Takadu wants to plan a party for Noko's birthday, but it is to be a surprise. Takadu goes to considerable trouble to write and hand out invitations to Mrs. Warthog, Bat-eared Fox, Pangolin (a scaly anteater), Velvet Monkey ...
...it is a story that provides a great deal of enjoyment, complemented by delightful illustrations. A whole-hearted recommendation.
