how not to treat dyslexia
Advantages: interesting plot; sympathetic characters Disadvantages: fantastical scenes could detract from boy's growth
Solomon has a lot to be concerned about: his mother has left the family; his father is an alcoholic; and his (unrecognised) dyslexia means that he is bullied by his teacher and finds school difficult. When everything becomes too stressful, he escapes to the graveyard, and when plans to demolish his hiding place begin, he is forced to confront his problems.
The first section of the novel focuses on Solomon's family, gradually revealing his difficulties ... ...this section, I found the subsequent fantastical section in the graveyard spoilt my enjoyment of the novel. Although the writing was descriptive I found it difficult to sustain my engagement and lost concentration. (It is worth noting that I am not the target audience for this novel and that I generally dislike fantastical tales.) Although it is tempting to interpret this section as a metaphorical account of Solomon's struggle to take positive control ...

Dreams are not always what they seem
Advantages: well written, engaging story Disadvantages: Difficult for younger children to read on their own
...she has become one of the most prolific children’s fiction authors around. Her work is easily distinguishable by the way she makes the child the centre of the story in a believable way. Her outlook is childlike and this makes her stories very engaging especially for younger readers. Her books seem to comprise all the essential ingredients for successful child fiction. The heroes are often children that are slightly marginalized in their own lives ... ...is also a familiarity about the settings, average households, average schools in average towns but inevitably these ‘ordinary’ children find a way to have extraordinary magical adventures.
THE DREAM MASTER
We are told the story of Cy an ordinary boy living in an ordinary town. When Cy sleeps like millions of other small boys, he dreams of exciting adventures in far away places. One day he wakes from a dream about ancient Egypt with the feeling ...

Don't bother, go for da vinci code instead!
Advantages: Interesting concept of boy maturing to manhood Disadvantages: Poorly written, very dull.
...an interesting era and Matteo the main character goes on a journey through Italy doing deeds for the Borgia family. There is murder and deceit in the book but really nothing to gripping. Learnardo was hardly mentioned in the book neither Lucrezia. The story was also very dissapointing, hardly a page turner. The characters are a bore and the author's writing style is lifeless. The only part I did enjoy is Matteo maturing into manhood which was really ...

The Hell where youth and laughter go!
Advantages: A poignant, thought provoking story of becoming an adult in WW1. Disadvantages: A bit graphic in places...make sure you have a tissue handy!
...my latest book review. Remembrance by Theresa Breslin was recommended to me by a number of friends ~ they said I would enjoy it and that it needed to be reviewed to encourage others to read and (hopefully) enjoy it too. I borrowed a copy from work and settled down to read….a few hours later and I had gone through a whole gammit of emotions and completed a wonderful book.
~~~THE AUTHOR.
Theresa Breslin is a librarian who lives in Lenzie in Scotland. ... ...As I said before, Remembrance is set in World War One. The initial setting is the small Scottish village of Stratharden in 1915 and the story revolves around a group of five teenagers from two families. They come from different social backgrounds, but the insular nature of the community has meant that they have grown up together and their lives are linked.
The War has been going on around them for a while, but they it hasn’t really had much of an ...
A gRATifying read!
Advantages: great read Disadvantages: none
...my daughter spotted a book that she knew well as it had been read many times at her nursery. The said book - That Pesky Rat - is written by the excellent Lauren Child, whose books we always look out for ever since my daughters fell in love with her creations of Charlie and Lola. I didn't know this book but I was impressed to note on the front cover that it was the gold winner of the Smarties Book Prize in 2002! I have to confess that I am not the ... ...rat. But people call me that pesky rat. I don't know why. They say I smell, But that's not my fault, it's the dirt'. You get the sense that this rough is quite a tough operator but that he has a soft sensitive side too. This becomes particularly apparent as he describes all of his friends who all are somebody's pet! For example his friend Pierre, who is a chinchilla is looked after by Madame Fifi, a very rich lady. However, life is not always a bed ...
