Review of Viking at School - Jeremy Strong by tractor-boy

Advantages: Clever and original characters
Disadvantages: None worthy of mention

...at the great big, hairy Viking sitting in their classroom.” So what exactly do you do with a Viking in this day and age then? This was the problem facing Mr and Mrs Ellis When Sigurd “Siggy” the Viking warrior and his wife Mrs Tibblethwaite turned up at their hotel. Sigurd and his wife were enjoying life as a touring wrestling tag team until a bout against Bone-cruncher Bogis and Monster Mash got a little over heated and had to be broken up by the ...
...it would mean the hapless Viking would be away from the hotel for a time they agreed and so the steps were taken for Tim and Zoe to take Sigurd to school for a unique show and tell session. Unfortunately things didn`t go according to plan, and Mr and Mrs Ellis` joy at being rid of him was short lived when they heard just what had happened at the school from the flustered Headmistress, Mrs Crock. “At lunchtime, Mrs Crock took Sigurd home. She had ... Read review

Review of Virent Ova! Viret Perna! Green Eggs and Ham - Dr. Seuss by frkurt

Advantages: The eggs are still green! The ham is still green!
Disadvantages: Latin, alas, is obscure...

...Non mi placent, O Pincerna, Virent ova! Viret perna! ‘Ova’ is a recognisable word even to those who have not studied Latin – the ovum means ‘egg’, the ovaries of course being the place eggs are produced. ‘Perna’ is the word for ham. (Ironically, the word ‘ovum’ is a neuter term in Latin, rather than female; the word ‘perna’ is a feminine word.) The word ‘Pincerna’ means waiter or server (it can even mean butler). Virent/viret is actually a verb, ...
...roughly translate into They do not please me, O waiter, Eggs that are green! Ham that is green! Yes, I know, it suffers a bit in translation; imagine the power of poetry and how sometime this can be lost in translation. Thus, it is important to understand the literary license with which Jennifer Tunberg and Terence Tunberg have translated the text. They have made an effort to make sure the meter, rhyme, and story fit the text as a Latin text, ... Read review

I can count!
Review of Count on Goz - Steve Weatherill by danielalong

Advantages: Lovely way to start to count
Disadvantages: None

Count On Goz by Steve Weatherill A great way for very young children to be introduced to counting up to 5 and to learn about number formation. Children do tend to enjoy lift the flap books, so it's almost certainly going to be a winner. Many children will already be familiar with Goz, the appealing yellow gosling. This time, we meet Goz in the early morning, near the river when everything is quiet. A little yellow goose is bottoms up... "Who's ...
...as developing an ability to count and recognise numbers to 5. The simple text means that it is suitable for National Curriculum Reading, because children can easily see and be encouraged to point out capital letters, full stops and question marks. Because the animals are easily distinguishable, even if they can't read the words, they can be encouraged to use picture clues. A useful book for very young children who are beginning to count.
