Cat Mummy
Review of The Cat Mummy - Jacqueline Wilson by snow_queen

Advantages: Amusing
Disadvantages: Admitedly, not one of Wilsons best

...cat for being sick on the floor. Verity decides that she should not bury the cat because she would not like her cat to have her head in the ground with all the worms, so hs decides to mummify her cat so that they can stay together for ever and ever. But, unfortunately her gran does not like bad hygine, and so Verity has to do everything on her own. She finds it very tough, and when the cat starts to smell bad hidden in her wardrobe, she has to throw ...
...More than a story about the death of a cat, this is the story of a young girl over coming her fears of death left after her mother passes away, and is a truly touching book for 8-10yr olds. It is this coming to terms with death that makes the book worthwile, and the hidden messages about death not being an ending can prove very comforting to someone dealing with the death of a loved one. To me, this story didn't hold much significance, but just by ... Read review

Learning how to draw.
Review of How to Draw Princesses and Ballerinas - Fiona Watt by neenn

Advantages: Great for fans of ballerinas and princesses. The stickers!!
Disadvantages: Some of the drawings are too intricate.

...of what to draw and how to draw it is helpful but the drawings although initially look quite child-like and simple aren't that easy for young children to copy from (unless they are particularly artistically gifted!) and are quite obviously done by adults. Saying that, she has had lots of pleasure in making many of the simpler princesses and ballerinas and more so with the stickers which she has used on a number of her individual masterpieces!! ...

Tattoed from head to toe
Review of Illustrated Mum - Jacqueline Wilson by fashionista27

Advantages: It shows the extraordinary circumstances some children have to deal with
Disadvantages: -

...In the book The Illustrated Mum, Star and Dolphin have to live with their mum's "wierd moments". Their mum (Marigold) is covered from head to toe in tatoos, which Dolphin loves. She thinks her mum is the brightest, most beautiful mother in the world, but her half-sister Star hates all the tatoos and wishes she would have them removed. Star sometimes can't help wishing that their mum was more normal. One day, when Star is introduced to her father ...
...to put down, and it leaves you wanting to know more at the end of every chapter. The Illustrated Mum was a pleasure to read, and I would definately read it again. Jaqueline Wilson is an excellent author and I would highly recommend her books. Thanks for reading =D ... Read review

Chas' Nan is Gunning for Hitler.
Review of The Machine Gunners - Robert Westall by tange

Advantages: A short punchy story that kept my interest.
Disadvantages: Have to remember to order the sequel from the library now!

I first read The Machine Gunners a number of years ago, not long after I read J.G. Ballard’s Empire of the Sun and watched John Boorman’s excellent film Hope and Glory. I was on a bit of a Second World War theme, so The Machine Gunners seemed an obvious next choice! ~~~The author. Robert Westall was born in 1929 in North Shields in the North East of England. He has degrees from Durham University and the University of London and he then became an ...
...as his full-time career. The Machine Gunners was his first novel (written in 1975) and it got him the Carnegie Medal. Robert Westall often used his childhood in Tynemouth as a setting for his books and he was able to draw on his vivid memories to tell his stories. Sadly he died in 1993, but his books live on. ~~~The story. This book (and the sequel Fathom Five) is set during the Second World War. It centres around a group of children and their ... Read review
