Zagazoo - a brilliant book, especially for boys/parents of boys

Advantages: Quirky, warm, funny and surprisingly deep!
Disadvantages: A big (albeit light) book, so little babies will need you to hold it for them

The image that Ciao is choosing to illustrate this book is completely wrong - it's actually an A4-sized book with a white background and a typical wild Quentin Blake illustration on the front of a couple opening a brightly-coloured parcel to find a baby i ...

A Child's Experience of War

Advantages: Compelling reading, an alternative perspective of war
Disadvantages: Doesn't give us much in the way of facts

Let me begin by saying that the photograph Ciao have decided to use for this book is incorrect, and is rather unfortunate given the nature of the actual book I am going to review. Diaries written in war time can be excellent primary source accounts of ...

A book that reads like a video game

Advantages: Perfect book for action loving boys
Disadvantages: Not a great story from an adult perspective, high levels of gore and violence.

Does anyone remember the Old 'Give Yourself Goosebumps' books where you chose the ending? The new I horror series is something like those books, but quite a bit more violent. Every few pages you will be given a set of tow or three choices - each of which ...

A very different version of Snow White..

Advantages: likeable characters, and original retelling
Disadvantages: not much character development besides Zelah's

I really loved Zelah Green by Vanessa Curtis. I was told beforehand that it's a very loose retelling of Snow White, but if I hadn't known that, it probably wouldn't have been obvious to me while reading it as there is so much that is different. And I do l ...
