Absolutely brilliant
Review of Cross Section: Castle - Stephen Biesty by poet831

Advantages: Well written, lots of beautiful illustrations. Great for kids of all ages. A useful tool for supplementing school projects or as part of a home-school theme on ships.
Disadvantages: To do this book justice, you really need the time to examine each page carefully.

Another masterpiece from the winning duo of Stephen Biesty and Richard Platt, and part of the Dorling Kindersley "Cross-Sections" series is "Castle". This book shows the inner workings of a 14th Century English castle, and as always, provides so much information, you'll want to come back and look at it again and again. Stephen Biesty's talent as an illustrator is immense, and he and Richard Platt (who writes the book) are brilliant in their fields. ...
..."Cross-Sections" series, each two page spread gives a full page illustration of the inside of the castle, with a particular topic in mind. Richard presents a one to two paragraph editorail, and then lines from the drawing come out to sidebars with smaller illustrations and fuller information on some aspect of that topic. Some of the topics included in "Castle" are Defense and Seige, Garrison and Prisoners, Building The Castle and Living Like A Lord. ... Read review

What was it like to be a gladiator?
Review of You wouldn't want to be a roman gladiator - David Antram, David Salariya, John Malam by danielalong

Advantages: Lots of information
Disadvantages: none

...Northern Europe. It states that you (the reader) still try to fight the Roman army, and then gives a few suggestions as to what might happen to you if you are unlucky enough to survive the battle and be taken as a Roman prisoner. You could be sold into slavery, sent to work in the mines, but the one thing you would NOT want to happen to you is to be sent to be trained as a gladiator! The book then goes on to describe in very short chapters (double ...
...Romans. It is divided into 12 chapters with the first being "Gotcha! Romans get their man", and follows the fortunes (or misfortunes) of the captured person. There is a chapter on being sold at the market, gladiator school, different kinds of gladiators, sea battles, and fights with animals. Each section gives lots of information, and asides, with bits of humour thrown in to maintain the interest of children. There are handy hints, such as "learn ... Read review

I wonder...
Review of I Wonder Why Castles Had Moats and Other Questions About Long Ago - Philip Steele by danielalong

Advantages: Lots of information
Disadvantages: May not be detailed enough for an in depth srudy

I wonder why castles have moats This is one of a series of books which focus on (among other things) scientific and historical facts. This particular book was published in 1994, so has cropped up on numerous occasions. Most recently, it has been used because of Little Miss being involved in looking at homes- her logic is that some people live in castles. The first question "What were the Middle Ages in the middle of?" sets the scene. There is ...
...£3.99, which shows how long I have had it. The books are available from bookshops but check out amazon (watch out for high postage costs!) **What I think of the book** For reluctant readers who have an interested in quirky facts, this book, and the others in the series are a good option. The facts are historically correct but put forward in a short snappy humorous way. There is no need to trawl through pages of quite often dry text to find one ... Read review
