Absolutely brilliant
Review of Cross Section: Castle - Stephen Biesty by
poet831
Advantages: Well written, lots of beautiful illustrations. Great for kids of all ages. A useful tool for supplementing school projects or as part of a home-school theme on ships.
Disadvantages: To do this book justice, you really need the time to examine each page carefully.
Another masterpiece from the winning duo of Stephen Biesty and Richard Platt, and part of the Dorling Kindersley "Cross-Sections" series is "Castle". This book shows the inner workings of a 14th Century English castle, and as always, provides so much information, you'll want to come back and look at it again and again. Stephen Biesty's talent as an illustrator is immense, and he and Richard Platt (who writes the book) are brilliant in their fields. ... ..."Cross-Sections" series, each two page spread gives a full page illustration of the inside of the castle, with a particular topic in mind. Richard presents a one to two paragraph editorail, and then lines from the drawing come out to sidebars with smaller illustrations and fuller information on some aspect of that topic. Some of the topics included in "Castle" are Defense and Seige, Garrison and Prisoners, Building The Castle and Living Like A Lord. ...

A wonderful book based on HMS Victory
Review of Cross Section: Man of War - Stephen Biesty by
poet831
Advantages: Bright illustrations with lots going on in them. Lots of information. Brilliant book for children and adults!
Disadvantages: To really benefit from this book you need the TIME to do it justice ...
Every so often, you come across a book that makes you wonder how you could ever have got through life without it. Looking back on my schooldays, which I loved, I wish Stephen Biesty's books had been around them. I have always loved history and nautical stuff, old ships on display now as museums, swashbuckling pirate movies and tales of smugglers in Devon and Cornwall. Well, this book is marvellous - provides you with plenty to spark an interest in ... ...Sections" series published by Dorling Kindersley, "Man-Of-War" is a brilliant book giving all manner of information about an 18th Century warship. Written by Richard Platt, the book used HMS Victory as the basis for all the cross-sections. When I was a child this great vessel used to be moored on the Thames, in London, but has now been moved to Portsmouth which is one of England's premier naval cities and is a museum.
The book itself is full of ...

anwar
Advantages: see review
Disadvantages: see review
...Lynne Reid Banks.
Harry the poisonous centipede is the story of Harry, a young centipede who lives with his siblings and mother. To quote from the opening page- you may think that a centipede is not a very nice thing to be, but Harry thought it was fine. He'd never been anything else. Harry and his family communicate in centipedish . As there are no vowels in centipedish words sound very odd! In fact Harry is really called Hxzltl. Harry is not a ... ...that are juicy and munchy! Harry learns that some creatures are too dangerous to try and eat like flying swoopers and furry biters. The most dangerous creature of all however are hoo-mins.
One day the centipedes tunnel fills with smoke and they are forced above ground to escape. The centipedes find themselves in a hoo-min house and are in great danger. As you may want to read this to your child I'm not going to tell you how it all ends! You will ...

Advantages: will keep all learners engaged
Disadvantages: none
DK do it again!
This book is an exciting and informative resource to help support a science unit that many children (and some teachers) can often find hard work. Its colourful presentation and historical links create a powerful and eye-catching teaching guide.
The publishers Dorling Kindersley (DK) Ltd of London are well-known producers of high standard learning resources. This book was first published in hard back in 1988. However, this A4 paper ... ...materials produced for educational uses, DK have consulted experts in the field of study relating to the book. In this case Dr. R.F.Symes and the staff of the Natural History Museum in London have written and helped produce this excellent book.
Format of the book
The contents page is sectioned into 68 chapters. Although this may seemed alot for children of a younger age to take on board, each chapter consists of 2 pages. The book concludes with ...

Stretching the imagination of children
Review of I Absolutely Must Do Colouring-in Now (Charlie & Lola) - Lauren Child by
busycat444
Advantages: Colouring and story making with a difference
Disadvantages: It would be better with wipe claen pages. When it's done it's done.
...or faces.
Each page aims to get children involved with the story by writing or drawing and of course, thinking. This is a great book for the approaching summer holidays. If you have some "busy" little ones to look after over the summer I highly recommend this book. ...
