Advantages: can only be good for the children Disadvantages: some kids see reading as boring, but it is just a case of finding a subject matter to interest them - whether it's a football magazine, a comic or a book on dinosaurs!

As I got older, I used to have a pile of books to read at bedtime. In the school holidays, I would browse around the library and get out a load of books - some pretentious, high-brow authors I thought I should read and others just for pleasure. Both types meant I discovered some excellent authors.
When I became a mother, I was eager to encourage my children to get the most out of these hobbies too. I began reading to my children as soon as they were old enough to sit still and listen. People suggest that certainly by a child's first birthday, sitting down for a story should be part of their bedtime routine.
I began with simple stories and rhymes, soon discovering the books that my children preferred. I would recommend the Mog books by Judith Kerr and the Kipper books by Mick Inkpen, for example, as well as brightly coloured picture books.
My children are now aged nearly eleven, nine, eight and five years old. The older ones read voraciously - Enid Blyton, Jacqueline Wilson, plus of course, the Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling.
My five year old is learning to read. She brings home books from school, as well as having her own here. She listens to the story, picking out any familiar words she can recognise as she goes along. Then she often wants to 'read' the story herself, retelling it in her own words.
I think there are a lot of things you can do to encourage your children to read. Here are some suggestions -
1) Read to your kids. Make it a part of the bedtime routine, a fun time to spend with your child, quality one-to-one time, not another chore to get through.
2) If your children see you reading and enjoying books, they will want to emulate you and will become more interested in reading too. We always have a book or two on the go and the kids see us reading, so it encourages them too.
3) When they start school, they will be learning their letter sounds and bringing home books to read with you. It does help if you do this with them and encourage them all the way. When my daughter learns to read or write a new word, I am really pleased for her and praise her. Encouragement plays a big part in their enthusiasm.
4) Go to the library as a family. Encourage them to choose books to borrow. They can try out new authors, have a great choice of which ones to borrow and besides the books, they can also use the other facilities offered there - puzzles, videos, CDs, computer, children's activities, etc. Most libraries run a reading scheme to encourage kids to read books, often with an incentive - a medal or a set of postcards to earn, for example.
5) It does not matter whether they are reading a comic or an encyclopedia, they need to enjoy it and see it is fun.
I am not some sort of militant parent who makes their child sit down and read the complete works of Shakespeare. My children use the computer, watch videos, play on Gameboys and listen to CDs.
But every night, they have half an hour 'reading time' before bed, and I am pleased and proud to say that all my children love books as much as we do.
Advantages: Reading ability is crucial in everyday life Disadvantages: Aquisition of literacy far more difficult when dyslexia is present
Being literate is essential for anyone wanting to play an active part in society today, the importance of learning to read and write should never be under-estimated. It is crucial in every child's developmental programme, particularly in todays computer-orientated world where for so many children the attraction of computer games outweighs the enjoyment of reading. The development of reading and writing skills are affected by both environment and ... ...environmental situation plays an important role in a childs literary development, in particular: (a)Available reading, drawing and listening materials - a child needs to have access to, be comfortable with, and be guided with these important developmental aids.
(b)One to One attention, usually the mother/father, whom should encourage their child to become involved in the processes of using books, drawing and writing materials, listening to audio ...

Advantages: Helps them with other subjects at school and if made fun can turn into a lifetime love affair with books. Disadvantages: None
I have always been a bit of a bookworm. For as long as I can remember I would rather snuggle down with a good book then watch the television. My daughter seems to be going the same way too, she will sit and read for hours. I started buying her books when she was very young. I joined the Grolier book club when she was a baby and over the years built up a good selection of books for her. She has a bookcase overflowing in her bedroom filled with everything ... ...The first proper book that she took an interest in was a Ladybird book that a good friend of mine bought as a first birthday present. The title of it is First Five Hundred Words and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an easy book to start with. The book is filled with coulourful pictures of people, household items, colours, scenes, numbers and so much more. All the pictures are in categories and have the words of the objects written directly ...

I know this section is for 'childrens reading'. When i was about 9, i wrote a story for my cousins to read because they were fed up with the 'baby' stories aimed at their age! Please dont judge my story as i have wrote it now, but as something wrote when i was 9! ...one who does not read. Childrens literacy is very important. As a parent it is quite important to do your best for your child. To encourage your child to read is very important. Yes, firstly I know it's in the wrong category but I couldn't see it listed anywhere else!
So, here goes..........
Michael Morpurgo wrote war Horse, back in the eighties. It was one of his best, most well written books with an excellent storyline.
Joey is a horse, not a normal horse, but a horse that understands several languages and has written a book! Yes, this book has been written from the point of view of Joey, the young farmhorse sent out ... ...Albert is Joey’s best friend; at least they seemingly understand each other. They live on Albert’s parents farm in the British countryside, with the other – and older – horse Zoey.
The storyline is that Albert’s father buys Joey at an auction, but doesn’t really need him. Albert and Joey immediately like each other, but Albert’s father wants him to be a working horse, and so Joey trains him to plough fields. ...

Advantages: Very imaginative Disadvantages: witchcraft and dark arts
I've always loved reading, and still do like to readchildrens' books especially those by Enid Blyton. Since her, I've yet to find a writer who can rival her. Looks like I've found one in J.K. Rowling. Initially I thought that this will be quite a boring book, but after the first few chapters, I find that it's engrossing. One word of caution though, it dabbles in witchcraft and magic, which are dangerous grounds. For little children, they may have not learnt to discern reality and imagination. Therefore, it is best if parents or an adult was on hand to explain things. But, credit must be given where credit is due. The writer's imagination is superb! How on earth did she come up with those names and places, moving staircases, singing hats, diagon alley, and chocolate frogs!
The main character of the book is Harry Potter who lives in ...
