Chimay Red

Belgium is a well known for making great beer as France is for making excellent wine, and Chimay Rouge (red cap), a Belgian abbey beer, is no exception. In my opinion, Chimay rouge is one of the greatest Belgian Trappist bottled beers around and (unusually) easily available in supermarkets. There are many Belgian abbey beers, but most of these, although having roots in monastic brewing, have become large corporations and are no longer made by monks. Not so Chimay. I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing, I really don't. It used to be that Belgian beer was pretty hard to find and usually involved a jaunt across the channel in search of some the nectar. These days it's becoming easier to find all the time and it's even possible to find Trappist Ales in mainstream supermarkets. Strange as it may seem monks make great beer, but why! This is an opinion about Chimay Rouge one of the best Belgian Trappist bottled beers around and one on the ones you can easily get hold of at your local supermarket! This is just a review for the everyday man who has some tastebuds. I am not, and do not try to be an amazing beer critic. Just thought I'd give my opinion on my favourite beer at the moment. I used to buy lots of Leffe Blonde from the supermarket. I heard that Chimay was similar but much better quality. What a beer!!! And at 7% it made my dongue go tizzy !! It is similar to Leffe only tasting smoother, more complex and stronger :o) It is actually brewed within the walls of a monastery in Belgium and it sure tastes holy!! (oh dear).
