~ About ~
Chinese Cinderella is the heartbreaking true story of Adeline Yen Mah from when she was a toddler up until 14 years of age. The book is written by Adeline Yen Mah herself.

Adeline Yen Mah's Chinese Cinderella is the childs version of the early chapters of her bestselling autobiography, falling leaves. After the death of her stepmother, she felt compelled to sell her story. The book is set in World War 2.

~ Storyline ~
Adeline Yen Mah's mother died giving birth to her, so the rest of her family tell her she's bad luck, and never forgive her. Adeline has Three older brothers as well as an older sister. A year after Adeline's Mother's death, Adeline's Father re-marries a young erusian beauty whom the children call Niang. Niang andAdeline's father then have two children, a boy and a girl. Niang never treated Adeline well, nor her brothers and sister. The step children and the other children are never treated the same, the step children are not treated well, the other children being treated very well. Niang never likes Adeline and her father does not show her any love either. In fact, the only people who ever show Adeline any love are her Aunt Baba and her two grandparents, Nai Nai (her grandmother) and Ye Ye (her grandfather). Chinese Cinderella is the story of how young Adeline struggles for her acceptance and to prove her worth.

~ Characters ~
In Chinese Cinderella, there are countless characters. It may grow confusing as the characters have Chinese names, so most people aren't used to them, and also because of the way the brothers and sisters are called. The main characters are;
~ Adeline Yen Mah (also known as Yen Jun-Ling in the book) - Main Character. Written in first person from her Perspective.
~ Big sister - Adeline's only (full) sister who is about 6 years older than her.
~ Big brother - Adeline's eldest brother who is about five years older than her.
~ Second Brother - The second oldest brother who is about four years older than her.
~ Third brother - The youngest of Adeline's (full) brothers. He is about three years older than Adeline.
~ Fourth Brother - Adeline's step brother, the youngest of all the brothers.
~ Little Sister - Adeline's step sister, the youngest girland child overall.
~ Niang - Adeline's step mother who never treated her well.
~ Father - Adeline's father who dosen't show any love towards her.
~ Aunt Baba - Adeline's Aunt who believes in her. Adeline loves her a lot and needs her. She is a best friend to Adeline.
~ Ye Ye and Nai Nai - Adeline's grandparents who also believe in her. Adeline loves them a lot

~ Extra ~
At the end, the book ends with a happy ending. The actual story ends with a letter, which you will see is the perfect way to finish it. After the story, the story of Ye Xian (the original chinese cinderella) in chinese writing. Although I couldn't read it, I still looked at it for a long time. Chinese words are mentioned in brackets throughout the book, so you can recognise some of the words. The story of Ye Xian (the original chinese cinderella) is also in the last chapter of the book, chapter 22. Before you start reading the book, there is a Preface and an authors note. Adeline Yen Mah has also writtten some words about the unwanted children in the world today which is very emotional when read. After the book there is some text about the history of China and a Postscript.

~ Book ~
The front cover (and the back!) is red with a few flowers in some of the corners. A picture of young Adeline is also on it on the bottom right corner. The title is printed at the top of the book in gold with "The secret Story of an Unwanted Daughter" printed in white below it. This Chinese Cinderella shouldn't be confused with Chinese Cinderella and the Secret Dragon Society, a different book quite similar to this one. In the middle of the book there is some pictures. The pictures are of, the seven children, Father, Ye Ye and Niang, and Aunt Baba. Chinese Cinderella (Paperback 1999) is RRP £5.99, but as it's been out for a while, it can be found cheaper. I would reccomend this book to anybody, old or young, over 10 years of age, it is an interesting, touching book, and I throughly enjoyed the book.

I have read her books many times and always enjoy them. I think my favourite is falling leaves which is similar. Good review.
