Just to add another code to remember now...so that's;
Phone PIN Code (nearly everyone has one) Alarm Code (if you have one) Digital Safe Code (if you have one) ATM PIN Code Card PIN Code [Have I left any out - please let me know]
Now before I begin I want to point something out here.
Whilst, on 14th February 2006 (in the UK), everyone 'has' to use their Chip and PIN that's not actually fully true. You see what a lot of people don't realise is that you can still be asked to sign for things in shops but only when the card machine automatically decides to do this -- no-one can really have an influence in this.
Now then ... for those who may not know how this works let me just explain.
1> Customer (call him John Doe) with chip-less card gets sent a new 'chip' card from their bank / financial provider / credit or debit card company.
2> A few days later Mr. Doe receives a new 'PIN' hidden in a very secure way on the letter it-self. The letter also tells them to throw away / dispose of his old card.
3> John goes to his favourite clothes shop, Threads 'r' Us, to buy some new summer clothes since it's summer.
4> He selects his clothes and goes up to the till to buy them.
5> Sales Assistant scans the clothes in and then says to old Johnny Boy that it's a total of £69.99.
6> Doe wants to pay with his MisterCard so he hands it over to the sales assistant who inserts it into a slot on the card terminal. The sales assistant then enters the price on the terminal and checks it's correct before kindly asking the customer, in this case MoJo-Doe, to enter his PIN. (However sometimes the screen Johnny can see may ask him to check the full amount first)
7> Doe-brain enters his PIN and presses enter.
8> The card terminal processes the transaction, connects to a system via a telephone line and confirms the money is there then takes it away and sends it to Threads 'r' Us.
9> The sales assistant then asks J.D. to take the card out of the machine.
10> All done and Mr. J Doe has brought some nice new clothes.
This is meant to make it more secure but with the possibility of a signature being asked for, it's still a risk, although the whole asking for a signature should be rare.
Some card machines have 'shields' around the keypad whilst others don't. The ones that don't mean the customer has to either risk it or provide their own protection.
Funny thing is, I've got a prepaid card ('360Money') which doesn't even have a chip, it's just a signature!!
Apparently this whole Chip and PIN is meant to save time for the customers but that really depends on who the customer being served is and who's serving them.
Chip and PIN is the future really!

Advantages: Much better security (as harder to forge a pin you can't see), so less fraud! Disadvantages: Having to remember PIN numbers of multiple cards
