Chives look great in any garden at the front of the border or as part of a herb garden . They also look attractive in an ornamental garden and are really one of the easiest herbs to grow . Sow the seed in March and plant out once they are hardened off in May and they will romp away . Like all herbs they do not need a very fertile soil and will tolerate most conditions . Once you get a clump established they will multiply rapidly and can be split up and transferred to other parts of the garden . The chopped leaves can be added to salads and go well with cheese dishes too . In fact they have a multitude of uses and if I had to pick one herb as a must have in my garden it would be chives . They are worth growing just for the flower power alone . However if you intend to harvest them it is best not to let them flower .
Hi Lee. Great opinion I will give chives a try next summer.
I have a very small vegetable plot where I've grown green beans, beetroot, strawberries etc., but unfortunately haven't been able to eat much as the birds get at the strawberries and love them - they also managed to eat every cherry off my cherry tree!! I don't want tips how to stop them though as I prefer the birds to the cherries.
I've added you to my list. Hope my planting opinions aren't too mundane, I'm not an expert I just enjoy it tremendously - I try to be as organic as possible.
