Like many of Julias books, this is a ryhming story. The story line is very simple and with an average of 10-13 words per page, it is an ideal story for young children.

This is a fabulous book for young children, I'd say it's suitable for ages 2-5 years. The story encourages children to express themselves, by showing various emotions throughout the story. The story also promotes ... more
My daughter picked this book out at the book store and after glimpsing at some of the pages, I decided that it looked like a fun book, so I bought it. I also noticed that the book was written by Julia Donaldson, who is one of my favourite children's authors. For those of you who have read my review on 'Room on the Broom', please ignore the author part of the review.
The author. ~~~~~~~~~ 'Chocolate Mousse for Greedy Goose' is written by Julia Donaldson and was published by Macmillan Children's Books in 2005. Julia use to be a singer/songwriter for children's television. She became a writer when one of her songs (A Squash and a Squeeze) got made into a book, which was published in 1993. Julia has published 29 books which are available in the shops, some of which are:
Room on the Broom The Gruffalo The Gruffalo's Child Monkey Puzzle The Smartest Giant in Town A Squash and a Squeeze
The Illustration. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The book is illustrated by Nick Sharratt, Nick studied graphic design and has been involved in creating humorous illustrations for magazines. Nick now illustrates for other authors as well as for his own stories. For this book, Nick uses bright colours in his illustrations, which catch the eye. The animal characters are very well presented and show a range of emotions, such as: happy, suprised, sad, cross and tired. The pictures are really fun to look at, for example the first page has a seal sitting at the table, wearing a napkin and holding a fork and knife. The first page also shows a cow wearing an apron and oven gloves, bringing the meal to the seal.
The Front Cover. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The front cover is very simple, yet it stands out. It has a blue gingingham sort of background. It then has the title written in big bold yellow letters on the right hand side. On the left hand side there is a picture of a goose holding a big bowl of chocolate mousse. There is a orange band at the top of the book, with the author and illustrators names.
The Story. ~~~~~~~~ Like many of Julias books, this is a ryhming story. The story line is very simple and with an average of 10-13 words per page, it is an ideal story for young children.
The story begins with 'hungry seal' waiting for his 'meal', 'busy cow' brings the meal. There are other animals gathered around the table and basically, each of them take it in turn to say something about the meal. As well as the seal, goose and cow, other animals included in the story are: a gazelle, shetland pony, chimpanzee, hen, duck, kangaroo, rabbit, mole, hyena, swan, moth, pup and sheep. The animals have macaroni and carrots and then move on to chocolate mousse. The story finishes with 'helpful pup' suggesting that they do the washing up, but 'lazy sheep says no lets sleep', so all the animals go to sleep.
My Conclusion. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a fabulous book for young children, I'd say it's suitable for ages 2-5 years. The story encourages children to express themselves, by showing various emotions throughout the story. The story also promotes eating vegetables, for example: 'carrots-yuck says fussy duck', 'They're good for you says kangaroo'. This is a very addictive story, so if you buy it, be prepared to read it over and over again!

Advantages: Rhyming, adjectives, animals Disadvantages: Swan doesn't get any chocolate mousse
...macaroni and carrots followed by chocolate mousse, but in the realm of children's books anything is possible. Julia Donaldson has in fact created a wonderful book bursting with rhyme, adjectives and the idea of differing personalities in Chocolate Mousse for Greedy Goose. The title is actually based on a line from one of the pages and the alliteration probably makes it the most obvious one to have been chosen.
On each page we meet a different animal, ... ...and five, possibly six, and the Amazon price of £3.49 is excellent value.

***The Author & Illustrator***
As with quite a few of her books, Julia Donaldson has paired up with Nick Sharratt to put together this wonderful rhyming book.
Julia Donaldson is such a popular author that I'm sure most of you out there with young children will have seen one of her books, if not actually own a few yourselves. Her most well known book has to be the Gruffalo but she has also written lots of other fantastic books such as Conjuror Cow, ... ...***The Story***
Told in rhyme this book is all about a group of friends, getting together to eat a meal. It starts,
"Where's the meal? Asks hungry Seal.
It's coming now, says busy Cow.
As we turn the pages we see that each animal has a question to ask or an answer to give and a variety of foods such as pasta, vegetables and finally the pudding are all brought to the table.
"Chocolate Mousse! Says greedy Goose.
Don't just grab it, says angry ...

that the horse puts the knickers on his head hilarious.
The flaps add that bit of mystery to this book and this is another feature that keeps my son busy whilst I am reading the story to him. He knew most of the final rhymes after a few days of getting this book from the library and it may have to be one we think of buying for him as he has been looking at it on a daily basis.
Personally, I love the expressions on Cow's face when the tricks go wrong and the look of sheer joy at the end when all the rabbits appear from under her cloak and the animals are all cheering.

***The New Bit***
As far as I'm aware the original book does not have the extra bit in the back of this special book. You see this book is done as a song and the simple right hand piano music is shown in the back of the book. If your child loves music and you know your notes then this is a great idea for giving them that little bit extra.
