The first edition of excellent handbook was extremely well received by both students and lecturers alike. It has helped to simplify the often complex and difficult task of choosing and using the right statistics package. This is a book for any student or professional biologist who wants to process data using a statistical package on the computer to select appropriate methods and extract the important information from the often confusing output that is produced. It is aimed primarily at undergraduates and masters students in the biological sciences who have to apply statistics in practical classes and projects. Such users of statistics do not have to understand either how tests work or how to do the calculations and these aspects are not covered in the book. The new edition has been updated to cover the very latest versions of the computer packages described expanded to include coverage for logistic regression a more detailed consideration of multivariate analysis data exploration and further examples of Principle Component Analysis and Discriminate Function Analysis are given.
Advantages: Impossible to put a statistical foot wrong with such clear and concise explanations Disadvantages: None: I wish all statistics books were this well written
...Most advanced statistics books are usually either all theory or all practice. Using Multivariate Statistics is a carefully crafted blend of pure theory, application and discussion which the authors update every five years or so. The material is revised regularly to ensure that the commentary on the computer packages is up to date and that any new fads or fashions in the world of research are included (eg structural equation modelling was added to the Third Edition after an upsurge the use of this technique).
If you’re already starting to feel a bit nervous or statistically inadequate you might want to skip the next couple of paragraphs and go straight to comments under the subheadings. The last thing I want to do it put anyone off what is a very accessible volume that can be easily understood by graduate students...

Advantages: It's Calvin and Hobbes Disadvantages: Just Sunday Strips
...a comic strip shows how much the story of Calvin and his tiger Hobbes touched the lives of those who read it.
A lot of the stories are set in the woodland around Calvin's home, probably being set around the mid-west USA like where Watterson lives. We see Calvin and Hobbes having fun, friendship, disagreements and quite deep conversations for such a young boy.
Bill Watterson is well known for his integrity towards Calvin and Hobbes, which is why the only (official) Calvin and Hobbes merchandise available are the collection books.
So for those of you unfamiliar with Sunday Strips, these are basically larger than your daily strips, taking a lot of page up (or all of it as it used to be), they are also in colour which quite a number of daily strips usually are not. As you can imagine newspaper cartoonist who where given the opportunity...

Advantages: Gives words in context; very light weight Disadvantages: No English-French section
...I had never heard of this book before, so when I saw a brand new copy going on Amazon Marketplace for 9p, it seemed worth paying £2.75 postage just to satisfy my curiosity. (It is actually an American book, and the recommended retail price is £1.90.)
I'm not quite sure why it was given that particular title, as the blurb says that 'its contents encompass more than 1,000 of the most frequently used words in the French language.' I'm afraid I have not counted the exact number, as I was more interested in reading the contents!
The book is divided into three sections. The first of these is the Alphabetical (Dictionary) Section covering forty-nine pages. After this comes a Category Section which is four pages long. The book ends with a one-page section entitled Vocabulary tips.
The Preface actually suggests starting...
