After reading the first two books in this series I rushed straight into the third with much excitement and anticipation, thankfully, well for me anyway my husband is sick and tired of me cooking and reading at the same time, yes I can multi task, this book was not a disappointment!
The book I will now review is - “Chosen, by P.C and Kirsten Cast”.
Please be warned, before reading this review be aware that this will contain spoilers of the first two reviewed books, this unfortunately is inevitable.
This book starts from the same day the book finishes in Betrayed (see previous book review!), even though there are two books previous to this, due to the sheer amount of action held within only two months has elapsed since Zoey Redbird, the newest and by far one of the most powerful fledglings around, has been marked to eventually become a vampire.
After discovering that her once mentor and surrogate
mother Neferet, high priestess of the house of night, seems to have a slightly more darker agenda, Zoey feels a little isolated and unsure of who to trust.
Not only this she has discovered that the “dead” but now “un-dead” pupils of her school are living in the prohibition tunnels on the other side of town feeding from any poor soul who they come into contact with. The reason they died was due to their bodies rejecting the change taking place within their bodies, unfortunately something or someone has intervened in the process, so the pupils live….sort of, like zombies and with a severe blood lust.
Not only this but due Zoey’s blood lust (unknown for a fledgling of only two months to have), her imprinting with her “human” ex-boyfriend, her relationship with her new vampire boyfriend Erik and her being seduced by the gorgeous and cool professor Loren, her life seems to be rather complicated at the present!
Can she help her newly “dead/un-dead” best friend Stevie Rae, to remember her humanity and overcome her “deadness”, can she stop anymore unnecessary deaths within the school and can she stop her “ love quadrangle” finding out about each other before hell breaks loose……..literally!
Believe it or not this all happens within the first few pages of the book, and doesn’t go anyway to explaining the complexities of the story within, you certainly get your money’s-worth!
Once again the central characters stay the same as the previous two books with the addition of Jack, Damien’s boyfriend, he doesn’t have any affinity for the elements like the others do, but is an integral part of the story.
Affinity for the elements simply means that the closest friends to Zoey have been blessed with the abilities to cal their specific element, this again is an integral part of the story, and becomes increasingly so further along in the series too.
There is much more intrigue and mystery to this book, with there being some real gasp out loud moments in it, I have to say some of the things that happen I wouldn’t have guessed beforehand, though with the subject of the book, I think anyone would have struggled!
There is much more reference to Cherokee folk law and legend within this book, as Zoey is described as a descendent of the Guiga women, a spiritual and magic group of powerful women, she is suggested to have been picked specifically by Nyx, the vampire goddess for this reason.
This is a totally absorbing book that will keep you on the edge of your seat, though it also manages to keep it’s humour throughout, even when dealing with some particularly nasty scenes of murder which is a prominent theme running through this book. This being the case this is not a book I would consider being read by younger children, though it is aimed at the older teenager, though in my opinion even they should be allowed to read with care due to the high sexual content, this due to the blood lust that each vampire feels being equated to sexual endorphins released within the body, this is supposedly how vampires feed from humans without any restriction.
This book is the third in a six book series, of which I would highly recommend!
Pricewise these are available from around the £4.00 mark, though dearer in Waterstones but part of a “buy 3 for 2” offer.

I guess it had gone okay with Stevie Rae. I mean she had agreed to meet me tomorrow. And ... more
she hadn't tried to bite me which was a plus. Of course the whole trying-to-eat-the-street-person thing was highly disturbing ... Zoey's best friend Stevie Rae...
