High On Emotion - Chris De Burgh High On Emotion - Chris De Burgh
Oddly, for someone who once had such a major international hit (with "The Lady In Red", of ... more
course), de Burgh plays out his almost folk-y rock
music to fanatical, almost cult-size audiences
nowadays. Maybe it's for the best. For it's in the
live setting that de Burgh's own distinctive brand
of soft rock--full-on narratives full of climatic
themes, painted with broad sweeps of
emotion--really comes into its own. Stand-outs
here include "Spanish Train"--a Paradise Lost for
the late 20th Century--and its fellow Spanish
Train And Other Stories track, the haunting "A
Spacemen Came Travelling". High On Emotion is a
good place as any to catch the de Burgh live
experience. --Everett True

High Achiever: The Life and Climbs of Chris Bonington High Achiever: The Life and Climbs of Chris Bonington
High Achiever tells the story of one of the most influential characters in British ... more
climbing, Chris Bonnington. Author of the
award-winning K2-The Story of the Savage Mountain
and Trango: The nameless tower, Jim Curran in no
stranger to climbing and mountaineering and has
escorted Chris Bonnington on four Himalayan
expeditions. Curran, in his easy-flowing but
gripping style, reveals the mystery behind the
life of Chris Bonnington, through his pioneering
approach to the Eiger, Annapurna and Mt. Everest.
The foreword, by Reinhold Messner (best known for
his solo climb of Mt Everest without oxygen),
reveals "He has never been out for records. His
personality is not to be measured by comparison
with others. It is the sum of knowledge,
suffering, character. Bonnington has stature. He
has earned his title". Curran reveals how
Bonnington's life has been far from
simplistic--from a failing school pupil and a
distracted army officer to a world leader in his
field. The course of his life has had as many ups
and downs as the mountains he lives to climb. High
Achiever gives us a rare insight into Bonnington's
physical and emotional world; his drive and
passion, the realisation of his own insecurities
and self-doubts. It is a must for anybody who
loves the outdoor life and Curran's portrayal of
Bonnington's unique character makes this an
absorbing read. --Chris Hall

Chris Moyles - Radio links written down
Review of The Gospel According to Chris Moyles: The Story of a Man and His Mouth - Chris Moyles by  kirkytracy

Advantages: Easy - good holiday read, need another book though!
Disadvantages: Too quick, finished before you know it

...For anybody who doesn't know who Chris Moyles is, he is the Breakfast show DJ on Radio 1. Chris presents the show along with his sidekick Comedy Dave and his 'team'. They include Dominic Byrne (Newsreader), Carrie (Sports), Rachel (Producer) and Aled. Not sure exactly what Aleds role is other than covering for Rachel and being the object of Chris's ridicule on a daily basis. Chris is not everybodys cup of tea and is the self confessed 'saviour of Radio 1'. I personally like Chris Moyles. I first heard him when he was on in the evenings. As his popularity grew he got more prime time spots such as Saturday mornings and eventually the breakfast show. I find that Chris cheers me up in a morning. I listen to his show on the way to work and I don't think a record gets played for the first half hour. I asked for this book as a Christmas... Read review

Good insight for Chris Moyles fans
Review of The Gospel According to Chris Moyles: The Story of a Man and His Mouth - Chris Moyles by  joolsb77

Advantages: Good insight into broadcasting industry, get to know the real Chris Moyles
Disadvantages: Simply written

...I have just finished the hardback version of this book after getting it for my birthday. I was really pleased with the present as I listen to the Chris Moyles Show every day on the way to work and used to listen to his drive time show he did previously on Radio 1 so I feel like I know quite a bit about him and was interested to know more and to discover how he'd become so successful. Firstly I think it's obvious Chris has written the book himself rather than use a ghostwriter. The language is easy and it's really quick to read. The one thing that irritated me was the way he kept counting down how many words he'd written and how many he had left to write....i just wanted him to get on with the story and it felt like he couldn't be bothered and was just padding. But apart from that I thought the book was really interesting. It gives... Read review

The Watchman - Chris Ryan
Review of The Watchman - Chris Ryan by  NUFCAdam

Advantages: This is my favourite Chris Ryan book and i have them all
Disadvantages: As much as i tried i could not guess the twists

...Chris Ryan is an ex SAS soldier who writes novels based loosely on his experiences of combat. During the original Gulf War, Ryan was the only member of an eight man team to escape from Iraq; three colleagues were killed and four were captured. This was the longest escape and evasion in the history of the SAS and the tale was written in the autobiographical bestseller 'The One That Got Away'. Since the initial non-fiction book Chris Ryan has written 8 novels as well as a couple of non-fiction and children's books and it is thought that the powers that be in British Intelligence are not happy with Ryan who they feel has made their trade secrets known to enemies and civilians. The Watchman is the most complete Ryan novel I have read, telling the story of an SAS soldier paid by British Intelligence to track and kill an assassin... Read review
