Robert Rankin is a genius

Advantages: It makes you use your brain in ways you never have before.
Disadvantages: none that I can think of.

The greatest show off Earth was the first Robert Rankin book I ever read and now he's my favourite author. I'll give you a basic idea of what the book's about but I'll try not to give too much away! There are two main characters, Raymond and Simon. Raymond is your average beer drinking 23 year old who loves life and tries to make everybody happy. One day he gets abducted by a flying starfish from Uranus and gets sold as food on the venusian market! He gets rescued by a flying circus, meets the girl of his dreams and gets told he's to save the world from a strange race who live above us although we can't see them!!! While all of this is going on, Simon is still on Earth. He's a bit of a lad and will sleep with anybody (which makes his girlfriend angry) but that's the least of his worries because he too has to save the world from ...

Review of The Greatest Show Off Earth - Robert Rankin

Deceptively Obvious

Advantages: It shows Hugh Jackman is willing to expand his range.
Disadvantages: Poor direction, contrived plotting, sub-standard performances and a lack of surprises.

so contrived. The way Jonathan and Wyatt meet is highly improbable; why would a high-powered lawyer randomly introduce himself to an auditor late at night and suggest they smoke a joint together in the office? Surely that alone would sound alarm bells for the accountant? But then for a woman he spots on the subway to turn up on The List adds up to one coincidence too many, even before she mysteriously disappears. Let's face it, as the film is called "Deception", we know it's highly unlikely that anyone is who they first appear to be and it makes it stupidly easy to spot the twists. The characterisation is pitiful. Jonathan and Wyatt are polar opposites just to make the contrast between them as great as possible. So while the former is an exceptionally dull accountant living the life of an office drone and with little going for him ...

Review of Deception (DVD)

Rankin does it again

Advantages: Great storytelling
Disadvantages: Drags a bit with over padding

I have fallen behind of late with my reading as I keep finding new authors that are fascinating. As a result, I recently checked how I was doing with Ian Rankin's Rebus books, and realised that I am, indeed, a couple behind. with this one and the subsequent 'Exit Music' to read and get up to date on. So I settled down to read The Naming of the Dead, expecting and hoping for another thoroughly good Rankin tale. And essentially I got it. Another murder case for Rebus to solve, some more bosses to annoy and a whole lot of trouble to get into is the order of the day, and not for the first time for the Scottish Detective Inspector. Set in 2005, Rankin uses the Gleneagles G8 summit to provide a backdrop to the political aspect of his tale, with protests and high levels of security for foreign dignitaries featuring quite heavily in the book ...
