...almost any group of people, Ciao members use jargon. It can be very confusing, even offputting for those who are new - yet once we've been here for a while we take it all for granted and forget that some folk don't understand what we're talking about. So here, for the enlightenment of anyone who's been bewildered by Ciao-talk, are thirty sets of terms with their explanations. I probably haven't covered everything. If anyone wants to know what other ... ...those who are new to Ciao - or who haven't yet written many reviews - is 'white dots'. ..."Connotes" ~~~
Recently, Ciao member, Kukana posted a comprehensive listing of Ciao terms and her explanations for them. As I was reading it, it occurred to me that words (here, "Ciao terms") have both a connotative and a denotative meaning. • DENOTATIVE MEANING --The denotative meaning, roughly stated, refers to a word's literal definition; the objective, "vocabulary exam" translation of the word. • CONNOTATIVE MEANING --The connotative meaning ... ...any additional list of literally-translated Ciao terms I might provide, would likely prove to be superfluous. Since, as of my reading of Kukana's list, a list of connotatively-defined Ciao Terms had yet to be created, I began to wonder what connotative or "de facto" definition I might provide each Ciao term Kukana listed, just in case I ever decided to create my own consumerly-helpful list of Ciao Terms. Well, guess what? ...Yep. Here it is; my list, ...

Advantages: Great Community Spirit! Disadvantages: Abuse!
...my 100th opinion here on Ciao and I believe it’s tradition to write a review on Ciao itself, so I have decided to do this about Ciao Terminology although I have to say I still don’t really feel qualified to give advice, I still feel a relative newbie here.
I believe this category was introduced to help newer members here to find their way about on the advice of other more experienced Ciao members, just think of it like a dictionary.
... ...Okay we’ll start with Ciao itself first, Ciao is a consumer web site aimed at providing the true consumers opinion about companies and their products, a bit like WHICH? Magazine, only you can be sure that the members on here will tell their version like it is and not how certain companies would like you to see it. Chances are there will be more than one opinion written for each product, in fact in some cases I have seen hundreds, some will ...

...with my 1 year on Ciao so I couldn’t resist writing it on a Ciao subject. Don’t get confused by the hi-tech name of this category; Ciao Terminology isn’t as confusing as it first sounds, I will explain…..
This category was introduced by the wonderful eca99ajm and was formerly called Ciao Terms. The name Ciao Terms was slightly misleading for newer members as it clashed with the official Ciao Terms & Conditions. It was later ... ...features used on Ciao. Therefore, Ciao terminology is just like a Ciao dictionary FOR Ciao members written BY Ciao members.
I hope this will be useful to newer members and make light reading for older members too. The aim of this opinion will be to address the official Ciao terms and features and incorporate a few commonly used lingo that Ciao members may use.
Everything in Ciao seems to begin predominantly with the letter 'C' (or sometimes ‘P’) ...

...the most important rule in Ciao is that what follows is simply my opinion, that's what this site is about - YOUR OPINION. Secondly I come from a family that has its own language. We hardly ever call anything by its real name and I have come to see that whilst this group behaviour is fun and makes you feel included in the pack, to outsiders or those trying to enter the fold it is less than helpful and can be seen as being offensive.
Use of language ... ...I think that the Ciao Community, i.e. active members of Ciao, have developed a quasi-language to build that sense of belonging that as humans we all strive for. Some of the words have been forced upon us - e.g. Ciao's Most Wanted but then this quickly becomes abbreviated to CMW and eyebrows start to be raised. Other words have come, seemingly from nowhere, the grope (or the yahoo Ciao group) was probably a typo by someone and others such as LOL or ...
