"cilest...reliability of this contraception!!!"

hi, i was taking microgygon 30 for 4 years. one day i started bleeding very heavilly and i passed a large lump of what seemed like flesh when i was bleeding. i wasnt pregnant but i was in alot of pain. i was reffered to a gynae ward and examined. the lump i passed was sent to pathology and it came back that is was a piece of my endometrium. this was because of the pill i was on as it was too strong for my body and too many hormones in it. this pill had also made me gain about one stone in weight. the doctor (in the hospital)changed my pill to cilest, and after taking it for 4months properlly, i was pregnant. i couldnt believe it as it was unplanned.i was in a bad relationship and a baby was definatley the last thing i wanted.I asked the doctor(my own gp) why this happened and he said he and his wife had finished their family, then his wife became pregnant on the same pill.(cilest) he said he was confused and came to the conclusion that his wife wanted another baby and never took the pill. he said that a year later his wife became pregnant again on cilest and he said he has no faith in that brand of pill, as he now believes his wife, and from the amount of patients he has seen, that got pregnant on cilest...This pill obviously doesnt work as the same thing happened my sister, she has a wee girl now. cilest is the cheapest pill going and doctors should start reporting their findings.i am now on yasmin and having no problems. it would be good to actually know how many people have got pregnant on cilest!!!

Cilest isn't the cheapest pill on the NHS actually. It costs nealry £6 for 3 months' supply, which isn't a lot, but it's more than older pills such as Ovysmen or Microgynon (around £2). The problem with some of these pills that use older progestogens such as levenorgestrel (norgestimate is newer but metabolises as levenorgestrel, like that in microgynon) is that they have more side effects and may be less effective at stopping ovulation. The newer progestogens such as drosperinone (Yasmin), gestodene (Femodene) and desogestrel (Marvelon) tend to be more effective, with less undesirable effects such as nausea, PMS, breakthrough bleeding. Hope this helps.
