CiscoWorks for Windows Version 6.1 is a set of Web-based device monitoring and configuration tools that are suitable for small network deployments. It discovers and organizes information about the connectivity of Cisco and other devices in the network into a topology map that is easy to understand and navigate. The map provides a visual interface into information such as traffic thresholds, protocols, connection problems, and device status. Using the CiscoView tool, network administrators can view an image of each Cisco device, complete with its interfaces, indicator lights, and power status. Each device interface is color-coded to indicate its functional state with one-click access to each port's configuration settings and advanced statistical information. CiscoWorks for Windows helps administrators quickly become aware of and respond to problems in the network by sending e-mail, voice, or pager alerts when problems occur. Troubleshooting tools provide information about active protocols, Remote Monitoring (RMON) statistics, and link information, so problems can be quickly isolated and corrected. CiscoWorks for Windows is an easy-to-deploy and cost-effective solution that helps network managers maximize their administrative effectiveness, while minimizing the time spent managing the network's resources.
Advantages: Stable | User friendly Disadvantages: Not the most secure OS | Expensive
...point to make is that there are two versions of the complete software available, one is the retail package, which is what I'm reviewing and the other is the OEM version, which can only be bought with a piece of hardware and is intended for use when building a computer.
---Why I bought it---
I bought this package because my original operating system was destroyed by a nasty virus, and as I had changed the way my hard drive was formatted, the supplied recovery disc wouldn't work. I didn't have time to get an OEM version, and didn't need any hardware anyway, so I decided to just buy the completepackage to save myself time.
---System Specifications---
Windows XP Home is quite hungry in terms of processing power, RAM and hard drive space and requires that the computer meets AT LEAST the following specifications (although the higher...

Advantages: Great new feel, built in firewall, virus protection & automatic updates Disadvantages: Slow at times, hackers target it
...connection or a DVD player, these are just extra things that allow you to do more with your computer. You DO have to have all the things in the System Requirements part, though, otherwise the computer won't work very well.
--- Which package? ---
You are now probrably wandering whether you should get Home or Professional. To be completely honest, you don't really need Professional, it's just got a few extra features, but comes at a much higher price. I have XP Home and I use the computer for business, and it workscompletely fine.
But when it comes to upgrading that's different. You must be completely sure that the current operating sytem can be upgraded to XP. Please look below for information about this.
Upgrading to Windows XP Home:
Windows 3.1 - NO
Any Evaluation Version - NO
Any Server Version - NO
Windows 95 - NO
Windows 98...

Advantages: Can be used as a server, or workstation for things such as http and ftp. Very Stable. Can be configured to exact user preference for many purposes. Much support available, through irc and other mediums. Wont crash very often. Disadvantages: Software support is still not great
...RedHat Linux, an open source operating system, available free via download from ftp.redhat.com or packaged for a small price. All linux distributions differ in certain ways, but share a common ground, that is the kernel, or the heart of the operating system. ReadHat 6.1 comes with 2.2.12 and I have found it to be relatively stable so far, after recompiling it from the source code, to include support for only what I need... This is the big advantage of a Linux operating system, one can build it up to be exactly the thing its needed for. Linux can appear daunting at first, something which could put people off it, but my advice is to read the manuals, and any documentation you can find about GNU/Linux systems, and other UNIX type systems, before attemting to install it, which will make everything seem much more simple should you...

Before I start this review I'm going to apologise for how long it is likely to be, but to properly review such a huge product as an operating system is going to take quite a lot more than a few paragraphs. To make it easier for you to find the... more
