Advantages: Feature full ? broadband router, 4 port 10/100 switch, print server Disadvantages: Technical support seem to read off a script
Hello! I haven't been on Ciao for quite a while now, but may come back here more often, after my exams anyway.
US. Robotics is a name you 'can' trust. It has a good reputation for building reliable modems and networking equipment. This was one of the main reasons I chose this piece of equipment, as opposed to one from SMC.
What is a BroadbandRouter?
---------------------------
Well simply put, it routes one internet connection to a network, allowing you to share a single internet connection in a home or office network.
This particular router, model USR018000, is designed specifically for broadband. As cable/DSL broadband internet becomes more common, and since I already have ntl's cable modem service, this is an excellent addition to my home network of two computers and a laptop. ntl only provide one IP address per customer ...
Advantages: Very Cheap, with lots of features Disadvantages: Will help with CCNA, but may stuggle with CCNP
I bought one of these routers off ebay to help with my upcoming (Cisco) CCNA exam.
These are by no means cutting edge routers, and are obsolete now as they only support 10Mbps via their AUI (lan) port and support a limited amount of protocols.
The router itself has one AUI port, which when used with a transceiver can connect to either another router or a switch (at 10Mbps); 2 serial ports which can be configured with a routing protocol such as frame relay to connect to another switch or ISP data terminal equipment, a console port to configure the router itself, and an AUX port for modem connection.
Though well past it's sell by date, the switch is perfect to get to grips with Ciscos IOS (internetwork Operating System) and set up simple routed networks in conjuction with other routers and switches.
One thing to be aware of when buying ...
Advantages: Does what it says on the tin ( once set up ! ) Disadvantages: Pain in the arse to get working.
's together on a network is a major pain, but the benefits are great if you manage to do this.
This router, I would recommend, it does it's job fine....once wired up, you can forget all about it.
For future reference, if I have to break the thing down again, I marked the body of the box so I could plug the wires straight in again.
I'm sure that if you bought any other router, wireless or not ?. You'd be faced with the same problems I had.
For me it works, can't ask any more from it than that.
The data transfer rates are 10 mbps .... more than any of the best computers can achieve! ( at the moment !)... the best I can manage on a 2 meg broadband connection is a download rate of 230 kbs , fantastic when compaired to the 3- 4 kbs dial up I used to have ! so this router will not slow down anything at all.
Best of luck???I recon you ...
