Theres no question Cisco's products are of top quality and most people wouldn't even look anywhere else for an office IP phone. The 7940 is one of the more basic of Cisco's range, with limited features compared to newer / higher spec models.
The 7940 I use is connected to a network of around 100,000 IP phones, it is used regularly for general phone calls and voice conferences with up to 500 people. The phone itself is strong and durable, though somewhat bulky. The buttons are large, and spaced well apart which makes it very easy to use, and unlikely that you will press the wrong button by mistake.
The menu's in the phone are fairly easy to navigate around, though i often get the scroll up and down arrows confused with the volume up and down buttons which are less 'in your face'.
The features are limited, only 2 shortcut kets for speed dialing and only 11 calls of history can be stored, not good if your out all day and miss 12+ calls. Call divert is easy to set up and switch on and off. There is a voicemail button that you can setup to dial your answer machine number, directories (missed/received/dialled numbers), settings and services.
There are also buttons for Headset/Handset, Mute and Speaker. All the norms you would expect from an office style phone.
whats great about this phone, and similar models, is that yes the features are limited, but the quality is very good. The sound in the handset is very clear, and the loudspeaker is also clear.
The only issue i have found is that the handset is an odd shape and isn't very comfortable against your ear. Those of you who hold the phone with your shoulder will quickly become uncomfortable with the standard handset.
Edit - The phone was around £130 in Oct 2011, there is plenty of choice for that price, do your research. Thanks Ithoughtyoudneverask
