The CCNA changed earlier this year. Not a great deal of problems though.
A CCNA is the Cisco Certified Network Administrator which indicates that the holder of the certificate has passed a Cisco exam indicating that they can carry out the operation of an administrator in a Network IT function.
The actual exam is taken online via either prometric or VUE which costs about £90... The pass mark is a rather high 85 % give or take 1%...
As I said the exam changed recently, it used to be 65 questions and was quite straight forward...
Nowadays the Exam also consists of a performance related section on a Cisco router/switch whereby the screen represents an actual screen display from a switch and asks you to type commands etc instead of multiple choice type answers.
The exam is now 45 questions which are slightly harder and make sure that the candidate has knowledge in the technology instead of being able to read a book and pass or by using a braindump site...making the exam harder for the less experienced...Which is a good thing since the market does seem to be flooding with CCNA candidates, some having no industry experience, certainly the classes I attended with LearningIT around half had no prior experience of Cisco.
The subject matter is roughly the same with no new material although the question bank has changed accordingly due to the new question format.
The Cisco website gives a better insite into the exam as well as a demonstration of the performance related terminal emulation.
The certification expires after 3 years and if you score over 92 % you may advance to teach CCNA after other courses...CCNP etc...The Cisco Certified Network Professional is more indepth and indicates a great knowledge in Cisco products with more emphasis on installing and configuring.
I mention Braindump sites, a braindump is essentially a list of questions and answer which appear in the question bank of the CCNA, the actual exam questions which if you want to study could in theory get you through the certification without knowledge or understanding, whilst Cisco advise against using them I would say that anywhere questions exist to help you is an advantage, just check the answers you are given as some of them may be wrong.
As for is it for you, only you can answer that, what I would say is that if you have experience then Yes, if not then possibly you may find it difficult to obtain your first role as any employer would be both giving you the experience to move on to a better job withmore money and they arealso paying you to learn with them.
It is a good start in Networking though, it is vendor specific though, something like the Comptia Network + course may be better to show employers you are interested in Networking whilst allowing you to attain the basics and be non-vendor specific allowing a wider scope of roles.
If you have any questions then leave a comment and I will reply.

Hello there, my other half also completed his CCNA in March and is now going for CCNP. Have you already done the CCNP? If so what training package did/will you use? Cheers PAula
