Advantages: Very Cheap, with lots of features Disadvantages: Will help with CCNA, but may stuggle with CCNP
...I bought one of these routers off ebay to help with my upcoming (Cisco) CCNA exam.
These are by no means cutting edge routers, and are obsolete now as they only support 10Mbps via their AUI (lan) port and support a limited amount of protocols.
The router itself has one AUI port, which when used with a transceiver can connect to either another router or a switch (at 10Mbps); 2 serial ports which can be configured with a routing protocol such as frame relay to connect to another switch or ISP data terminal equipment, a console port to configure the router itself, and an AUX port for modem connection.
Though well past it's sell by date, the switch is perfect to get to grips with Ciscos IOS (internetwork Operating System) and set up simple routed networks in conjuction with other routers and switches.

Advantages: Fast, Secure and Efficient Internet Connection Disadvantages: High level of Technical Expertise needed to setup more advanced features
...way to go.
So what's in the box?
Upon receiving your router in its posh Cisco systems box you will receive;
1 x 857 ADSL Router unit
1 x Cat 5 Ethernet Cable (for connecting your PC to the router)
1 x Console cable
1 x Manual
1 x Cisco Device manager CD (this is the software you may use to setup your router)
The unit itself is aesthetically pleasing. On the front you have various lights indicating various states the router is in - such as whether the router has completed its boot cycle, if there is a stable ADSL line, and weather or not a PPP session has been established to your Internet Service provider. If this light is on, you know your connection to the internet is up and you are ready to start communicating with the outside world!
On the back of the unit you have an inbuilt 4 port Switch which is a really nice feature...

Advantages: New faster wi-fi standard. Easy to set-up Disadvantages: None specific to Linksys, but wi-fi HAS to less secure than a wired LAN
...reason that I’m writing about a new one, is, not because the old system broke, but because the latest versions of this wi-fi equipment not only work faster (up to 54mbits/sec compared to 11) but offer far greater security for your wireless link, which is particularly important if you want to use it for on-line banking and/or stop some other freeloading ‘illegitimate person’ from using your broadband for nothing.
The old Linksys kit, which I wrote about over a year ago only provided for the earlier wi-fi encryption standard called WEP (Wired-Equivalent Privacy), which it now seems can be hacked if you give the hacker long enough before switching your PC off. Quite apart from that, the old kit cost around £120 including provision for the ‘distant’ PC, whereas this lot cost around £80, and my brother has ‘offered’ to take the old kit off my...
