When my father first put the idea of getting a 2cv into my head i was distincly not impressed, i mean how 'un-cool' is that? but, regardless of my complaint he bought one as a rolling mot falure with lots of work (mostly bodwork and chasis) needing done.
Some years later the project was complete, a new chasais was bought and fitted and the bodyshell repared and looking better than new. little it should be added was required on the mehanical side of things, the car had only covered 40 thousand miles which, in my opinion just when these little wonders start to shine.
The 2cv was designed to be a simple car, to be mas produced and maintained by anyone with the ability to pick up a spanner, as such it was an excelet choice of first classic to restore, parts are very cheap and easy to come by. a number of companys are dedicated to providing parts for 2cvs ECAS being usually the best.
and once you have one in reasonable condition they can offer some of the most enjoyable motoring available, it may not be the most spacious and comfortable vehicle ever but the ability to cruise along with the roof down in the summer is sureley worth it!
Another great benefit is the engine, it may be small and the car may seem slow but the economy such a small engine brings is worth it, even flat out you will get 45mpg from a well maintaned engine, tax and insurance are the cheapest possible too. join a club and insurance really is peanuts.
throwing a 2cv into a corner at almost any speed speed (i have seen 70mph!) has to be a motoring experience that every driver should have. it rolls like a land rover with jelly in the shocks but they are (apparently) impossible to tip over, the ride over bumps is fantastic too!
its the only car you can drive flat out and keep your license absolutely clean! so stop being a car snob and go pick up a peice of motoring history. for well under a grand you will get a good clean car needing little or no work and only very simple maintainance, heck there isnt even a radiator to worry about!
Turst me you wont regret it, these little cars are fullof character, love them and they will provide you with endless motoring enjoyment!
