French and Stylish
Advantages: Styling, Ride, Comfort, Gadgets Disadvantages: Thirsty
I've now had a Xantia 1.8i 16v for nearly 6 months now, It was bought as i'm pretty lanky and was completely fed up with small cars. Being 6'6" this is an ideal car as there is plenty leg room even when I have the seat back, I can have someone sit behind me. Also these cars can be picked up very cheaply, especially the Mk1. I paid £375 for a 1996 N reg with a year MOT and 100k on the clock.
I had looked for a diesel version as this would have been ... ...the price range I had set. Even with the high mileage this car runs sweet. No noises from the engine and no smoke from the rear.
For the price second hand I couldn't recommend something better, especially with equipment.
INTERIOR
The interior of this car is great, lots of room for 5 people and the seats are really comfortable velour covered. The front seats can be fully adjusted, but the driver has extra settings of seat height and lumbar support. ...

3 Citroen Xantias and still love them !
Advantages: Executive style comfort ride as copied by Rolls and Mercedes. up to 60mpg, good power overtaking Disadvantages: Its French, Should be British.
Just bought my Third Xantia, 2nd Xantia 2. Xantia second hand so residual value not an issue. Reliability better than any volvo, saab, ford, vauxhall, opel, rover and renault I have ever owned. Next car will be a C5. Ok if you use main dealer repairs can be expensive but that goes for most main dealers. Ride is superb , starts first time everytime no matter what the british weather throws at it. Drives well in the snow . Buy the 1.9TD or the 2.0 ... ...from European parts importers and just pay for labour never had any problems except rear ride height control which is a little nylon balljoint link which kept popping off. Stuck it on with a blob of silicon sealant adhesive, end of problem. Drove to St tropez from lincolnshire via folkstone ferry 1am Friday morning arrived Grimauld (next to St Tropez)11.30am Satureday not a hitch. Return after driving all over the area no problems, how many people ...

Pity Citroen don't still make this car
Advantages: Fast, comfortable, economic Disadvantages: Few
I had one of these cars (with the variant 2.1 turbo diesel engine) for 3 1/2 years. I sold it 4 years ago and to this day I regret doing so - it was simply the best car I've owned (out of 10, of various makes.) If I tell you that I'm now driving a Merc, that should give you some idea of my opinion of the Xantia.
After 3 1/2 years, there were no faults, no squeaks and no rattles. I was mightily impressed. It went like stink, making even Golf GTi ... ...drive from Lancashire to Aberdeen on little more than 1/2 tank of fuel. Four years on and I still occasionally see my old Xantia around - I've genuinely thought of approaching the current driver and offering to buy it back.
I think Citroens are vastly under-rated. ...

The eye of the beholder
Advantages: Performance, Handeling, Individuality, French Quirkiness Disadvantages: Insurance, French Quirkiness
...have no idea what a Citroen Xantia Activa is (which, to be honest, is most people) I’ll fill in some background – without trying to be too dull! The Citroen Xantia was launched about 10 years ago and is typically French and quirky – the “Hydro-gas” suspension system is the most obvious difference to most other cars. Instead of having regular springs and shock absorbers, the Xantia is equipped with a gas / fluid based suspension system, which, once ... ...on the clock from a Citroen specialist. All Xantia require a full overhaul of the suspension at 60,000 so make sure it’s been done otherwise you’ll have a big bill. The interior is free from squeaks and rattles, but the suspension has a habit of groaning in cold weather. There’s also a tendency to over inflate the back end, which comes down with a bit of a thump after a couple of minutes driving.
It returns about 350 miles on a full tank (60 litres) ...
