...am (?) i bought a Citroen C3 .. why ?? i hear you cry. Well here are the reasons...
My boss says im so tight I squeak, but there again being a professional buyer is that a bad thing ?!, I set out to buy a car that would not break the bank on the journey to work (its a 30 mile round trip, which isnt bad but could still hit the wallet).
The first thing I did was to check out a government website that details the most frugal ... .... The quoted figures for the C3 I bought were around 55mpg around town and just under 70 mpg on the motorway, this is where it gets interesting ! On a recent trip to Glasgow I managed to get out of the car (driving at 56, no sudden increases or decreases in speed except those that were required to stay safe) a massive 82 mpg . The fuel gauge is basically split into 5 sections of 8 litres, the manual requests that you do not click the petrol pump ... more

The first thing I did was to check out a government website that details the most frugal engines (ie those with a better mpg than the others) . The fuel gauge is basically split into 5 sections of 8 litres, the manual requests that you do not click the petrol pump when filling up to "overfill" as it where as apparantly on diesels this can have an adverse effect on the car somehow. Well, when the car lost its first fuel light I had done 160 miles (bar a few allowances this equates to 82mpg)
Apart from the cost of repair and maintenance (a recent service cost £165) and fuel consumption the other major factor is the cost of Road Tax, this is where the C3 has yet another bonus, the cost of Tax for a C3 Hdi 1.4 is £50 from the 2006 budget, yep , you read it right £50 !!
So, for the car to be this frugal , and this cheap to run, surely it hasn't much room for power or performance ? Wrong ! I have owned the following cars, My first being a Montego 2.0 Efi , which whilst not very boy racerish, moved quickly because it was a light car. The second was a Vauxhall Nova, again, light, but small. My last car was the Vauxhall Vectra 2.0 Sri (B version) , this really did move and provided all the bits and pieces , air con electric windows etc etc.
However in my opinion none of these cars have the pull of my current car. The engine is snappy, save for a small amount of turbo "lag" , the turbo seems to kick in at 2,000 rpm and stays with you through to about 3,500 rpm , not a large range but still enough for you to get into the next gear.Being a diesel it has plenty of torque and because it's a small car, its very nippy. If you treat the car without consideration though (really pushing it) then beware, it can feel as though its losing the rear of the car into the side. This to be honest though only happens when you really try to race away through corners.
The specification of the Exclusive model is quite simply breathtaking for such a small car with a small price tag. Electric Windows, numerous airbags for safety, Climate Control (instead of bog-standard air-con) , Cruise Control (Yes Cruise Control) and an overspeed indicator that can be set if you still want total control yet to be warned when your speeding.
The car has ABS as well as an electronic stability program which independently controls the brakes and power to each wheel to ensure you don't lose it through those tight corners.
Storage is not a problem, the car has under seat storage, a glove box (reputedly air con controlled, but I bought the car in winter and havent tried it yet) , a passenger additional glove box, side pockets. And whilst the boot is very small it does have a very highly acclaimed Moduboard system which is used for seperating different items in the boot.
One of the problems normally in small cars is room for the driver, I am 6 foot and 18 stone with quite a large frame and I find no problem whatsoever in space, in fact, when cruising with cruise control on the motorway, its great to bring down the additional arm rest and take it easy away from the rush of the fast lane. The car really does allow you to concentrate on the road.
Autosensing wipers are another feature that helps you with this as well. Simply flick the switch and at the hint of rain on the sensor (at the top middle of the windscreen) the wipers will adjust through the speed settings automatically.
In addition to cruise control there is an overspeed warning, this can be used to let you know if you are at your preset limit, set by holding onto a button the overspeed warning beeps to let you know you are at your maximum speed.
The décor inside the car is good, whilst not leather or anything particularly amazing, I find the comfort of the car allows you to travel in some semblance of style.
The kids are catered for by two small pull down tables , and whilst three can fit in the rear there may be a little discomfort for longer journeys.
The car is alarmed and also has a deadlock, both accessed by presses on the key fob which also Centrally locks the car.
So, with great fuel economy, maintenance costs, tax and low depreciation. A great specification and comfort to boot, I would recommend this car to anyone. Obviously it wont be bought by anyone, as cars nowadays are more and more becoming virtual hotels, but certainly for the cost, this little car seems to have found a niche.
The purchase price given represents what i paid for a second hand model in excellent condition
I have recently bought the 1.4l petrol C3 Desire in Black. If you are buying one from a dealer it is worth checking out the prices for the different colours. At the dealer i went to metalic paint was £100 more!
Thankfully i wanted black from the outset so that was a bonus.
The "Desire" version i opted for comes with a CD player and Air conditioning over the standard model. The power steering, electric windows, central locking and 4 air bags are ... ...on the windscrean wiper wand. Ii have not come across this before, though i dont know if that is in all the models as i was not expecting it in mine!
The seats have adjustable hight and the stearing wheel can be adjusted to suit at a flick of a button. Having a 5"9 length with a lot of that being leg i found that a wonderful innovation over my last car.
The drivers display is a little more space aged than i was used to, a lcd display of MPH rather ...

Took delivery of a new C3 Hdi LX Desire (diesel) in January, no faults on delivery, and 7000 miles later no faults have developed. It's been back to the dealer once for the first service.
It used a little oil until it had coverd 2000 miles but now seems to use none.
The fuel economy is nothing short of amazing, it's fitted with a display on the dash which gives fuel consumption, and that has never dropped below 60mpg. Most of the time it's around ... ...size fuel tank, should have a range of about 600miles.
The performance I've found to be quite good, and better than one would expect from a 1400cc diesel. This little diesel engine is the same one that's fitted in the Fiesta, the Peugeot 206, and the Maxda 2. For some reason it's slighty more economical in the C3, probably down to the tyres which are the Michelin enegy ones. These have a low rolling resitance.
There's a bit too much plastic inside. ...

Advantages: Fuel efficency, Low Tax, Low Insurance Disadvantages: None really, a few squeaks of the trim, rear leg room limited
I'm not buying that, was the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw the car on the Network Q forecourt. I was trading in a Freelander (bought for £15K and trading in for £6K max but that is another story or review when I get around to it) for a smaller car for commuting from Plymouth to Torbay a round trip of 60 miles. The C3 was right at the back and all the comments I had heard about Citroen's popped into my head, But.....
When I looked at ... ...A year has passed and I am happy as anything about my C3.
As standard I get 60 mpg which is a mixture of 60/70 up the A38 and anything from 0 to 60 across to Torbay with stopping for lights, town driving in Totnes, steep hills etc.
My tax is now £35 a year.
My insurance is £147 a year, full NCD.
My fuel bill is less than £100 a month, which with essential user allowance and millage claims is nill.
The car itself is a solid workhorse, the engine ...

Advantages: Low emissions, excellent fuel consumption, features and gadgets Disadvantages: Bouncy ride and relatively noisy ride
MY REASON:
I bought my Citroen C3 for £4900 after a very long research. I had a look at various other cars on the market and decided to buy this C3 ONLY based on economical and envirmental reasons. SAVING ON FUEL:
I live 50 miles away from work and that means that on average I spend around £280 per month on fuel. Driving a car that consumes less diesel (55MPG) my fuel bill drops to around £180 per month. I save £100 per month!!
SAVING ON ROAD ... ...car to my local Citroen dealer and they told me with fitment, it would cost me £490! I was shocked because I thought that this work can not be more than £150. I phoned another citroen dealer to get the part only price. They quoted £400 pound for the alternator only! Sad and disappointed I done a search online and found a good website - electricalcarspares.co.uk - who charged me £100 pound for the alternator including postage. I bought it and with ...

Advantages: Good fuel economy, pretty spacious for a small car Disadvantages: Seat has poor back support
I bought a Citroen C3 HDi Desire and have been pretty pleased with it. I travel aound 60 or 70 miles a day so wanted good fuel economy which I've achieved with around 55mpg.
The car is fairly spacious inside for a relatively small car and has been reliable so far (6 months).
My main gripe is that the seat does not give decent back support. I've therefore bought a lumbar support for £20 which has helped a lot but I think if you're paying £8000+ ... ...only other niggles is that the cheap plastic trim was not attached properly below the steering wheel and also that there is no closable storage within easy reach of the driver. That means that my loose change (for tolls & car parking fees) either has to be on display (thereby attracting thieves) or hidden away from easy reach. ...

I cant give a great deal of information, as i only drove this car in a 45 mintue test drive, im sure that long enough to give some impression.and having heard so many good views and so many bad ones. i had to try it out for myself
First impressions.
having looked around at different cars this one, looked easy on the eye, more suited to a small family car. there clearly isnt anyroom in the back for a dog ..it was used had one pervoius owner looked in good nick just the odd few curb scuffs on the wheel, inside there was alot of space and seemed very comfortable, inside looked a little cheap, but expected unless you going be paying £20,000+ for a car with leather interior.
Model i looked at was a CitroenC31.4HDi SX SensoDrive 2004
this comes with some little extras.

Last year, my mother bought a brand new CitroenC31.4HDi SX from our local dealer. The C3 was chosen because of its size, equipment levels, and very reasonable price. I'm sure that the 'cute' looks had nothing to do with the decision to buy...
Firstly, the good bits!
The diesel engine is available with two power outputs and it was the more powerful version (92bhp) that was selected. This engine is a marvel - the power output is very impressive for such a small unit, and the car is quick to accelerate and fast on the motorways. Just to put things into perspective, this 1.4 litre produces the same amount of power as the old 1.9 turbo diesel that did service in the ZX/Xantia. However, there is no trade off in economy - the car returns an average of 65mpg during daily driving, and on a motorway run 70mpg is perfectly achievable ...

Advantages: Looks good, plenty of extras, well built, spacious interior, no clutch Disadvantages: Automatic gearchanges could be better timed
When looking for a new car back in December 2006, I wanted something which ran on diesel, had a clutchless gearbox (i.e. automatic with paddleshift) and looked good. This combination limits youto a number of manufacturers it seems, and I ended up choosing between a diesel automatic Audi A3 and the CitroenC41.6HDi 16V VTR+ Coupe EGS. I chose the CitroenC4 based on the fact that it is better value for money (unsurprisingly) and looks better (I also already have a Citroen Picasso)
Design
I chose the 3 door version, as it looks much better than the 5 door version (which looks like a Ford Focus), a bit sporty even, and meets my requirements. I chose the "Iron Grey" colour, which I think compliments the car's salmon-esque shape. I don't see many C4s in the South-East of the UK, and it does stand out amongst the usual German marques ...
