Citroen C5 2.0 Estate

... In addition to the usual Fords and Vauxhalls, we were able to get Peugeots, VW’s and Citroens. I decided to go for the Citroen C5, 2.0 SX estate as I do like a decent sized car with enough load space to get all the kids toys, bikes etc. in. I’ve had it for about 12 weeks now and ... Citroen C5 Estate

Advantages: Big enough for the family and their luggage
Disadvantages: Typical French gear change

...decided to go for the Citroen C5, 2.0 SX estate as I do like a decent sized car with enough load space to get all the kids toys, bikes etc. in. I’ve had it for about 12 weeks now and have covered just over 1500 miles so I think I can make a reasonable assessment of it.

OVERALL LOOK OF THE CAR
It is very streamlined and looks good in the silver colour I opted for. It has aluminium roof bars which are, for the silver version, ...
...(1930 mm) but also the Citroen Xsara (1981 mm). I think this is due to the fact that the C5 has very straight sides, it doesn’t have many projections which keeps the overall width down whilst still giving plenty interior space for both passengers and luggage.

It’s fitted with 15” alloy wheels and, overall, it looks pretty good without ever reaching the point of being a head turner.

Grab a family transport bargain

Advantages: Big, comfy, and economical, motorway mile eater
Disadvantages: noisy suspension over rough roads, slightly iffy electrics

We decided to go for the 2.0 SX Estate as we've had 3 BX's previously (GTI, TD Saloon, and 1.9 RD Estate) and figured that the C5 2.0 HDi Estate was the natural progression to this line up. All our citroens have, in general, been very reliable. Even the suspension, which those that don't understand it think is complicated and expensive to repair, is a brilliant piece of engineering (good enough for Rolls Royce and Jaguar to make use of). We needed ...
...good on the motorway as we travel a lot of miles, as a family, making use of the brilliant French Motorway and Main A road system, the C5 does this kind of motoring brilliantly. As a general rule, we'll drive the full length of France (about 700 miles) on 1 tank of fuel, in around 9 hours (traffic permitting). The reason we can do this is simple, it's very quiet and smooth to drive at 80-90 MPH, and still gets well over 40MPG at these speeds, I've ...

Most fault-ridden car I've owned

Advantages: Lack of road noise, interesting shape, roomy.
Disadvantages: Too many faults, disappointing suspension, oil leaks, poor dealer support

undulations taken care of pretty well. At steady speeds, it is actually possible to exceed 50 mpg which is very good considering the size and weight of the car. Around town however, and on less well-surfaced cross-country roads, the suspension is far worse than a conventionally sprung vehicle and it will crash and shudder over raised manholes, holes and other imperfections. As a replacement for the Xantia, the C5 seemed to have a lot going for it, and it IS competent in some areas, but sadly, it is badly let down by too many faults and (for me) an indifferent dealer. I most certainly will not be buying Citroen again. ...

Sweden's little secret

Advantages: Practical, comfortable and well equipped
Disadvantages: About to be ousted by new model

is very powerful yet economical. The budget Vermont gets a CD Player, Climate Control and alloy wheels. CITROEN C5 2.0 HDI 110 LX ESTATE - £17,050 Argrably the best estate at the moment, the C5 estate is carnarvous, clever and the award-winning diesel is a stonker. OVERALL * * * * Overall, the Saab 9-3 is not the best drivers car and cracks are widening in it's format. But discounting the drive, the engine is brilliant, it's comfortable, very practical and the dealership was exceptional. A very underrated machine. Thanks for reading. Hope you haven't dropped off. Don't worry it's over now. Leave a comment as they are always read and appreciated...
