As a replacement for the Xantia, the C5 seemed to have a lot going for it, and it IS competent in some areas, but sadly, it is badly let down by too many faults and (for me) an indifferent dealer. I most certainly will not be buying Citroen again. ... more
Within minutes of taking delivery of this car I discovered the first of many faults - the indicators didn't work. And this after supposedly having a full PDI. Other faults have included:
Repeated oil leaks Continuous suspension problems Vibration at 70 mph Pulling to left (no fix according to dealer) Knocking from steering Intrusive whine from gearbox Creaking from front side windows
Problems have not always been resolved properly by main local dealer under warranty (despite written complaints) and in some cases, no supporting paperwork has been produced to verify what parts have been used. Getting on for two years since the car was bought, all but one of the above faults are still present.
On M-ways and most dual-carriageways, the C5 is a pleasant car to drive or ride in, with very low road or engine noise and the usual undulations taken care of pretty well. At steady speeds, it is actually possible to exceed 50 mpg which is very good considering the size and weight of the car.
Around town however, and on less well-surfaced cross-country roads, the suspension is far worse than a conventionally sprung vehicle and it will crash and shudder over raised manholes, holes and other imperfections.
As a replacement for the Xantia, the C5 seemed to have a lot going for it, and it IS competent in some areas, but sadly, it is badly let down by too many faults and (for me) an indifferent dealer. I most certainly will not be buying Citroen again.

Quick review of Citroen C5 2.0 HDi Estate
After 60,000 miles relativly trouble free driving -comfortable, roomy and powerful enough and 40mpg. apart from the road noise, my 2 big problems are:
(1) the drivers seat which has NO lateral support (I am not particularly thin!) and:
(2) the fixed toe-in that causes the rear tyres (£120 each) to wear bald on the outer side with none on the inner -front tyres last about 30,000 miles with my driving but the rear were almost bald on the outer side, untouched inner, by this tme. On the Xantia est. I did not have to replace rear tyres for 90,000 miles.
No support from the dealer on this front. ...

Quick review of Citroen C5 2.0 HDi Estate
Car almost a year old & still Citroen UK unable to correct engine fault. The car fails to respond to the accelerator & then engine slowly decelerates. The only solution is to restart the car. It cannot be trusted in overtaking manouvers and is very scary on motorways. Must agree with an earlier posting - the ride is POOR, worse than the old Citroen ZX and that had normakl suspension. Very disappointing compared to the old GSA's. ...

CITROENC52.0HDI 110 LX ESTATE - £17,050
Argrably the best estate at the moment, the C5estate is carnarvous, clever and the award-winning diesel is a stonker.
OVERALL * * * *
Overall, the Saab 9-3 is not the best drivers car and cracks are widening in it's format. But discounting the drive, the engine is brilliant, it's comfortable, very practical and the dealership was exceptional. A very underrated machine.
Thanks for reading. Hope you haven't dropped off. Don't worry it's over now. Leave a comment as they are always read and appreciated...

Advantages: Big, comfy, and economical, motorway mile eater Disadvantages: noisy suspension over rough roads, slightly iffy electrics
We decided to go for the 2.0 SX Estate as we've had 3 BX's previously (GTI, TD Saloon, and 1.9 RD Estate) and figured that the C52.0HDiEstate was the natural progression to this line up.
All our citroens have, in general, been very reliable. Even the suspension, which those that don't understand it think is complicated and expensive to repair, is a brilliant piece of engineering (good enough for Rolls Royce and Jaguar to make use of).
We needed a large, reliable and cheap to run car, that is good on the motorway as we travel a lot of miles, as a family, making use of the brilliant French Motorway and Main A road system, the C5 does this kind of motoring brilliantly.
As a general rule, we'll drive the full length of France (about 700 miles) on 1 tank of fuel, in around 9 hours (traffic permitting).
The reason we can do this ...
