I bought this car with the help of my parents at the age of 18. I needed something that was inexpensive and cheap to run. This car fit the bill. I opted to buy a Citroen Saxo Desire 1.1i three door hatchback. I bought this car from new in 1997 (P reg.) and still have it four years later. I have managed to eke out 110 mph out of this little baby, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone as I felt a little unsafe in such a small car going so fast.
This car cost me just over £8,000 pounds with some added extras like an alarm and basic trim fittings, however now that prices have gone down I could have got the car for at least £500 cheaper. The Desire comes with: CD player Velour seats (very comfy) Airbag Fold down rear seats (massive room when folded down – great when moving, esp. if you’re a uni. Student) Power steering (not necessarily needed in such a small car, but easier when parking) Fog lights (for that wannabe racer look) Immobiliser (helps your insurance premiums) Remote control central locking + Electric windows (3 door version)and sunroof
Since I was 18 at the time I was only given one years free insurance, however Saxo’s now come with two years free insurance. This is an added advantage, because insurance for an 18 year old would have cost me over £800 pounds. Now that I’m four years older my premiums have dropped to £350 with 3 years no claims.
My car also came with two years cover for roadside assistance – which I didn’t need but was comforting to have. This is also beneficial because at the end of two years you will have a reduced rate for continuing your membership.
This car is a good overall car which has served me well and is cheap to run, insurance premiums are low and is a nice car to drive. The downside is that it has slow acceleration power, the windows rattle when down, and it has a plastic like dash which looks a bit cheap, also the steering wheel can not be adjusted.
Overall a Saxo these days will cost between £5,940 (basic model) to £11,795 (1.6 16V VTS). My advice is to go for the best Saxo you can afford, as it will have a better resale value and you will probably enjoy it more. Also, shop around and look for special buys Citroen has on purchasing new cars.
I would especially recommend the Saxo to first time younger buyers, older people who will use it as a town run-around and those of you who do a lot of city or town driving.
I would not recommend this car to people who do a lot of motorway or long distance drives. This is because of the comfort factor and those bigger car drivers who try to push little cars like Saxo’s into the inside lane.
