We chose this vehicle because:

It was economical and still quite powerful.

Servicing costs are higher than for a petrol vehicle.

The Citroen Synergie 1.9TD was the first MPV we have have bought. We bought it because after our 3rd child was born, try as we might we could not get 3 car seats, my Husband, the dog and I comfortably in our estate car.
We chose this vehicle because:
It was spacious (7/8 seats AND a reasonable size boot space) It was economical and still quite powerful. It had lots of little features we liked. The seating was flexible.
We bought the P Reg vehicle in 2004 for £3,400 from Ebay. It had 130,000 miles on the clock and had been regularly serviced. My first concern was the reasonably high mileage but I was assured this mileage was low for a diesel vehicle. My second concern was driving a big vehicle however after my first drive I found the size was not a problem.
Layout: The vehicle has 2 front seats, 3 middle seats and 2 rear seats. We got the optional rear bench seat thrown in with the deal which made 8 seats. All seats are comfortable and have seatbelts. The seats are not huge in the rear but certainly large enough to take the kids car seats. The front seats can both spin around (captains chairs) so they face the rear, handy for picnics in the car. The middle seats fold down forward flat and have handy drinks holders in the back.
The gear stick is mounted on the dash in the centre which leaves lots of room for putting bags etc in the centre of the car between the 2 front seats. The handbrake is on the right hand side of the drivers seat. My husband has actually made a wooden box and mounted it in this area for CD's etc.
There are 2 rear sliding doors which I found invaluable as we had looked at other makes of MPV with only 1 sliding door and thought this would be a real limitation.
Even with all 8 seats in pace there is still a reasonable boot space. We still manage to fit our double and our single buggy in the boot together comfortably.
With regards to looks, I have seen better styled vehicles but who buys an MPV for its looks??
Performance and handling: As with all diesels the ignition needs to be turned on for a few seconds to allow the core plugs to warm before you can start the vehicle. This car has always started first time and has never failed. The engine purrs beautifully (for a diesel) and the turbo makes for swift acceleration. The 5 speed gearbox is smooth.
The power steering is good and very handy for parking but can tend to be a little overpowering if not used with care when driving at higher speeds. This can lead to the car feeling a little 'twitchy' at high speed.
The brakes feel good and strong.
We reckon from our calculations that we are getting around 30MPG from the car with all urban driving.
Features: The following features are ones we like: Drivers airbag All electric windows and sunroof which can all be controlled from the drivers seat. There is also a handy button to disable the window controls on all other seats to stop the pesky kids playing with them. 2 sunroofs. One large central one and a smaller forward one above the driver/front passengers head. Keycode entry to start car for security. Central locking which alerts you if all the doors are not closed correctly. Safety lock which prevents the sliding door from opening when the filler cap is open. Wing mirrors which fold away against the body A flashing red STOP light on the dash if a door is ajar. And a little diagram that lights up to show which door it is.
Minus points I have to mention: I find that the nose slopes steeply, which makes it impossible to see where the front of the car is from the drivers seat. Annoying but just takes experience I guess. The A pillars (the pillars between the side window and the windscreen) are very chunky and it causes quite a blind spot. I always find myself having to check both sides of the pillar before pulling out. The slight electrical problems we have had. The Rev counter has stopped working and the rear wash/wipe works intermittently. We could not find a cable from anyone, even Citroen themselves to wire up a CD player to the controls on the steering wheel. It costs £65 to fill it up! Servicing costs are higher than for a petrol vehicle.
Overall the vehicle is great. It is reliable and even on the Island where I live with lots of salty sea air has not a spot of rust one it. (Apparently Citroen are good for producing rust free cars) It has plenty of room for our whole family and plenty of luggage. (we have even taken a large highchair that does not fold down along with us when we removed one of the seats!) I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone with a good size family to transport. At the price we paid we were incredibly pleased and it came in a lot cheaper then an Espace or other MPV.
It is also worth noting that this vehicle is almost identical to the Fiat Ulysees and the Peugeot 806.
Advantages: spacious, easy seat removal, good view Disadvantages: expensive french parts, large 'blind spots'
...vision is not too good i.e. there are large blind spots which necessitate looking over your shoulder sometimes to check before manoevering.
These cars hold their price quite well.
The new model which replaced this is the Citroen C8. I would love to be able to afford on of those! ...

Quick review of Citroen Synergie 1.9 TD
After purchasing a citreon synergie i find it a lovely car to drive. Even though they are full sized seats there is still enough room in the boot for plenty of things. I have 4 children and need alot of space and this car gives it. I have had no problems with the car since i purchased it 12 months ago even though it is 7 years old. A diesel would be better as it is petrol and when you are just nipping around it can use quite alot but that's the same would all other cars. ...

...very own first seven seater citroen Turbo Diesel Injection two years a go, i choose this particular car because it is very cheap on running diesel and also all french car parts are very very cheap. It runs excelent and comfertable inside, on the outside the ten spokes alloyes and a spoiler on the back boot gives the car sports look, the car is very reliable for a 1998 R reg model and it has been driven over hundred and fifty thousand and its still ...
