This top-of-the-range Citroen is like nothing else and it retains typical Citroen virtues of superb ride quality and individuality. Self-levelling suspension means superb ride quality but if buying an XM, look out for leaking self-levelling spheres.
Unfortunately the XM suffers from body roll and understeer. Also, a dodgy image means it loses value quickly, although for buyers this obviously means amazing second-hand value.
The interior is a little disappointing but you do get leather seats, air conditioning and electric everything. Also, the electrics give frequent problems and servicing costs are astronomical. We ended up scrapping a perfectly good car because every year the servicing costs amounted to £££ hundreds and we were spending more than the value of the car. A real shame.
The XM has got to be the most undeservedly unpopular car. The depreciation is horrendous which make them excellent value second hand.
I have owned many cars but this has got to be the most comfortable to drive not only due to the unique susspension but also the huge seats. I use the car for towing, a job that it excells at, I think due to the fact that the rear wheels are set well back close to the tow bar.
Reliability is very good, fuel consumption ... ...car to own.
A lot of people show an interest in the car and say that they would like one, but very few buy one. I think most are put off by the strange design and stories of susspension failure. What I say is get one. Just look at how many people stay loyal to Citreon one they have bought one. And the XM is "top of the range". ...
