Our car is L registered and the suspension is still as good as new. The styling of the xantia has dated better than expected and this has made them more desireable as a sensible family car than many competitors. Inside the Xantia is the standard family car with a reasonably good helping of electrical gizmos as standard to keep the children amused. The car is a very comfortable one to ride in for long distances due mainly to the hydraulic suspension coupled with adaptive dampers which give a soft, floating, cushoning ride whilst removing a lot of the body roll that plagued the earlier Xantias. Our car is L registered and the suspension is still as good as new. The 1.9 TD engine develops fair torque at low revs but tends to run out of power very early and rapid up shift is required to keep things on the boil. The 5 speed manual gearbox has a short throw which helps quick gear changes and is relaxing around town. The handling is better than expected and thanks to its weight and suspension the car can be flung into corners with gusto without fear of excessive understeer. A lift off around a fast bend only tightens the line and only above 100mph does the rear end feel floaty in the least. For long distance cruseing the Xantia is hard to beat and although it may sound like a tractor the diesel engine returns a sound 45-55mpg on country roads and on the mororway. parts are expensive to replace due to the all in one hydraulic system but thankfully the car is reliable enough with ours at 200,000 miles and still going. In short a surprisingly good car in both practicality and performance.
...buy a 1993 L Reg Citroen Xantia 1.9 TD for £200 from a Citroen dealer in Chester.
The car had 63000 miles on the clock - which is very low for a car of that age.
The car still had 5 months MOT left to run on it, which was very handy.
I had to buy 6 months road tax which cost £93.
I rang around a few insurance companies and ended up with a quote for £220 for a years fully comprehensive insurance with Privilege.
So all in all, it cost me just ... ...which was very reasonable.
The car itself is a large family car with 4 doors and a large boot area. It has a very comfortable suspension system, which can be altered manually by moving a switch by the handbrake. It will either lift the car up onto high riding (which is ideal for the speed bumps and rough terrain) or it can be put on its low setting which allows for a smoother ride and better turning circle.
All in all, it is a very smooth ride ...

...had to be replaced. Typically Citroen also, all kind of lights, plastics and other stuff are beginning to break down or come off. Moreover, the transmission is starting to do strange things. For example, I was driving on a freeway, my foot OFF the clutch, just cruising. Suddenly the road started to go up a little, so I gave some more gas. The engine made more noise, but I didn't go any faster. It was just like held my foot on the clutch. Update: ... ...out of 2nd or 3rd gear by itself.
- But the worst thing about this car is that it has very, very large turning circle. In some very narrow streets with sharp corners it happens that I can't turn in one single movement! - This car has air conditioning. It's noisy and very difficult to regulate. I still haven't found the right way to regulate it after 2 years. Now why would you buy such a car. -> YES : if you travel a lot, if you do a lot of km each ...

...with that car. The Citroen Xantia I bought seemed to meet those requirements, and I was proven right in my choice, not only did it meet my requirements, it exceeded them in many respects.
First any car I own has to be able to tow a caravan. The Xantia was voted best tow car of the year, a few years ago, by many caravan magazines. The truth is, as I found out, when you are towing a caravan, it is very easy to forget it is there. The 1.9TD engine ... ...even for overtaking, the hydraulic suspension kept the car and van combination level and stable in all conditions. Although i don't normally exceed 60mph (the legal limit) whilst towing, I have found that I have to be careful with my speed, as the Xantia seems to be ignorant of the extra load.
Second Fuel Economy. Well i knew that diesel engines were economical, but i was surprised to find that 50 mpg was a realistic figure, with only moderately ...

...mine, and i think that citroen have sorted this problem out now any way. I purchased the Xantia because i was given a lift in a friends Xantia, and just could not belive the performance of this derv unit. The car i own is the VSX L reg, it has the top of the range interior, power steering, alloy wheels, ABS, Sports Mode on suspension.
The price i paid was well below similar cars in that size. The engine is very responsive and with the sports mode ...

Advantages: Economy, comfort, load carrying, towing ability Disadvantages: minor difficulty of getting correct Haynes manual and finding and fitting new fuses. Non-removable radio fitted as standard
We bought our Xantia TD Estate 14 months ago as a replacement for a car written off in an accident. We were open minded about what car we wanted, just that it had to be an estate and diesel.
We are competetive dinghy sailors and regularly tow our boat to different locations around the UK. The Xantia tows well, has good rear vision and door mirrors to check all is well behind us and, with the seats down, has masses of room for all the kit we need ... ...& B, there would even be room for an air-bed in the back! We travel down to our second home from London to the South Coast each weekend. We can get through the double journey and short journeys during the week easily on a tank of fuel, averaging about 450 miles on a full tank because of London traffic, much more if on a long run - over 550 miles on a weekend to North Wales, and that was towing the boat!
It is also happy with heavy loads. A boot ...
