Xsara is not a lemon to be squeezed
Advantages: Comfortable, economical, reliable, excellent on mountain roads Disadvantages: Poor press, short brake disc life
...oil between serving.
The Citroen dealership in Newcastle is excellent at servicing and they will collect and deliver either you or the car as you please - for free. Servicing costs are about £150 for annual service in 2005 compared with a charge of £220 in Northampton in 2001. They even repair the odd minor niggle for nothing.
Depreciation is quite steep in the first 3 years, but kept for longer is proving a much more attractive proposition. Overall ...

Advantages: Spacious Disadvantages: questionable reliability in an accident
Last Thursday I was travelling on a local motorway when I suddenly had to swerve to avoid a barrel in the road. The brakes locked and the car spun out of control and went up and embankment and did a complete rollover. Granted I was driving between 60 and 70 miles per hour, but what got my attention after the accident was that the airbag didnt deploy and my seatbelt snapped and broke prior to the rollover. The car pretty much held its shape after the ... ...and could have caused severe head injuries.
Granted - accidents have so many variables - but surely an airbag should deploy on impact and a seatbelt not snap?? All these were checked prior to the accident as part of the yearly service before the MOT test. Also the central locking went after about a year (after purchase)as well as the windscreen washers!!
Fortunately for me I pretty much walked out of hospital a few hours later with a sore back ...

Citroen Xsara 2.0HDi estate
Advantages: Great engine for power and economy, massive boot, bargain 2nd-hand. Disadvantages: Dull interior, dull image.
Well, it has done over 90,000 miles now, but the engine remains powerful, the seats supportive and the trim in good condition. Contrary to Citroen's reputation this car has been extremely reliable over the last 5+ years I have owned it, and the dealer's been fair too. Generally underrated, I have driven far newer cars that don't appear to have progressed much at all. Dirt cheap 2nd hand.
The best bits are:
The strong and economical engine. It shows ... ...drivers and I get 40mpg around town, and over 60mpg on motorways.
The nice smooth ride, far better than more modern hard-riding cars. It handles well despite the softer ride and the steering has some feel to it.
The boot is big for a car of this size, and gigantic with the rear seats folded down.
Tyre wear - on average they are lasting well over 30000 miles a set.
Standard stereo/RDS radio (surprisingly) not too bad.
The weaker areas:
The interior ...

Comfortable holiday car
Advantages: Comfortable Disadvantages: Not that economical, aircon not very good
While on holiday recently we hired a Citreon Xsara 1.9 Diesel for 2 weeks. It was a very pleasant car to drive with easy controls and a good array of standard equipment including air conditioning. There were 4 adults and a toddler and we fitted quite snugly into the car although when we came to move luggage as well we had to make 2 trips as the boot wasn't big enough for the massive amount of luggage we were dragging with us.
The engine is willing ... ...was stately rather than sparkling. However, it handled very well and smoothed the bumpy roads in commendable style. With only a driver aboard it could be hustled along quite nicely although probably at the expense of any economy as you really had to give it a good thrash. Talking of economy we averaged around 39mpg over the fortnight which given the easy running was not that impressive. The only good thing was that the tank was of a reasonable size; ...

Farewell to a noisy old friend
Advantages: Good value for money. Comfortable and economical. Disadvantages: Parts can be expensive.
I bought my 2003 Citroen Xsara 4 years ago whilst still working as an estate agent. It had only done 6,000 miles and was cheap at £5,500. It served me extremely well initially and, even now, at 68,000 miles is a reliable starter. It is still quite economical to run and reasonably comfortable on a long journey. A petty annoyance has always been the upholstery - it attracts dust and fluff from goodness knows where which is almost impossibly to vacuum ... ...think the Citroen has been a bad buy by any means, I just fancy a change. It pays to remember that you get what you pay for: it was a cheap initial purchase and has served its time well. Overall, good value for money, in my opinion.. ...
