Two years ago, I bought it for 2500€, that's around 1700pounds. There were 180 000kms on the clock, the car was 10 years old but in very good condition. I didn't hesitate to buy it as it was what i was looking for.
It's a diesel 1.9l break (estate) version. I wanted to buy this particular model for a few reasons;
~~ Estates are great for holidays with kids. The boot space is considerable, whilst the back seats are comfortable with lots of leg space. I'd be almost tempted to list what i got in there last summer holidays, but the list is way too long!
~~ This is one of Citroëns most simple recent models...after a BX with loads of options and hydraulic system...i was desperate to get back to a "simple" vehicle. Electric windows and side mirrors is as far as the options go on this model. To me, this means less to repair, and therefore cheaper to run.
~~ Whilst the options are a strict minimum, the comfort is maintained. The seats are pleasant, even after a few hours of driving. The steering wheel is adjustable, which is additional comfort.
The engine is the same as in the Citroën BX or the Peugot 309. Therefore mechanically simple (compared to "plug in" modern cars). It consumes approximately 5 litres/100km. There is no hydraulic system on this Citroën model. However, as with the other Citroëns, it is a front wheel drive. I do regret not having power steering on mine though, is it requires a rather physical to get out of a small parking space.
The Citroën ZX first came out in 1991. Light (950kg) and not too large (1,70m), or long (4.07m), it's an economical little car. It became popular after a victory at the Dakar rally by Ari Vatanen. It was manufactured in Europe until 1998, when it was replaced by the Xsara. The ZX is still manufactured in China, called the Citroën "Fukang", and sold locally.
There are 4 petrol versions (reflex, Avantage, Aura and Volcane) and 2 diesels (turbo and Flash). It comes with 3 or 5 doors.
The only (big) hiccup i had.... a leak at the diesel injection pump....which cost me way too much to repair. Otherwise it's a very reliable car. Mine has a powerful battery which makes starting up guaranteed, even when it's frozen and that I've already tried 6 times. This is a real pleasure compared to my previous cars.
OK, I've finally decided that i will list what i took in my boot last summer, because i find it's quite spectacular ; here goes;
A caravan fridge! (60cm x 40cm x 50 cm) a 2-gas camping gas with a 6l gas bottle, 3 tents, sleeping bags and ruck sacks, 4 bicycles (two on a bike rack, and two on the roof!) a folding table, 4 folding chairs, two saucepans and a frying pan, a carton full of food and kitchen utensils, a ha-mac, a tarpaulin, a carton of car equipment (oil, jacks, starting cables, cooling liquid, etc) a water container (50cm x 40 cm x 30 cm) many games; badminton, boules, tennis rackets, a football, softball rackets and balls. four floor mats and thin mattresses, four blankets and pillows, and a huge bag of teddy-bears! and I'm sure I've forgotten a lot of stuff. ;-)
What's great when camping with this car is that with the hatch door open, you can use the boot as a kitchen (so that the wind doesn't blow on the gas cooker), then tie a tarpaulin to the roof rack and to a tree (for example) to make good shady space for the table and chairs, or a shelter for when it rains.
I'm hoping to keep this car as long as possible as i really appreciate it. It's big but compact at the time, and simple mechanically but comfortable. I admit that the diesel engine does make a lot of noise, but that's the normal diesel inconvenient.
In France the ZX was often used for Police cars. The photos added to this review come from the net.
Advantages: Swift, relatively refined, 1.9TD reliable Disadvantages: Typical early ninties car, tyre wear, brakes.
I bought my ZX in 1994, having looked at a number of other diesel small/medium cars, and I opted for the 1.9TD. I have never regretted it, and I shall be very sorry to lose it if I have to.
When I bought it we had three teenage children, and buying a diesel was a necessity due to the miles we were clocking up taking them to music lessons. I wanted a car that was cheap to run, quick, agile, quiet and long-term reliable. The ZX has proved to be all ... ...and there is no noticeable loss of performance from about 30,000 miles, at which point I reckoned it had just about run itself in. I check the acceleration regularly up our local hill, and even now there are not many cars that can keep up. It can be uncannily quiet, certainly up to about 65 on a good surface, after which it gets a little more noisy, depending on the weather. At 80+ it starts getting quiet again.
Performance-wise it makes most cars ...

Advantages: Great engine, fun to drive Disadvantages: Image, driver comfort
...ago I replaced my aging Citroen BX TZD Turbo with a ZX Aura TD. The BX had been a pain to own with several breakdowns, all due to the complicated suspension so the change to a "normal" suspension on the ZX was a bonus.
The best thing about the ZX is the engine, it is powerful and frugal (averaging over 50mpg). The car is great to drive with good feel through the power steering and excellent road holding. Overtaking is usually no problem and I often ... ...of the class.
Servicing at Citroen dealers is expensive so I have given up using them. I have had the car serviced at small independent garages with no problems and all at half the price.
The car has been very reliable, never failing to start. The only problem of note is the brakes (which is a theme I've had with all the Citroen's I've owned). Although they are good they can be too sharp. In my experience the rear callipers are prone to sticking.

Advantages: Great value for money, good economy and handles/drives beautifully Disadvantages: The Volcane is too expensive for me to insure
I have been a ZX owner for a little over a year and i cannot praise this beautiful beast enough. It is my second car after owning an AX for a very short period till this came along and took its place. To cut a long story short i knew someone who knew someone who managed to get me the ZX at a bargain price. My 5dr Avantage is just superb for me, it has a 1.4i engine, electric s/r, w/ds and remote c/locking. The only thing it lacks is a set of alloys ... ...Although my limited experience i have driven various vehicles and this traditionally family car is quite surprising. It drives SOO well, the handling on corners and on country roads is superb for a car of its type and size. The suspension is forgiving and makes the ride comfortanble and enjoyable if you want to drive it hard. Although it only has 75bhp it has a lot of punch, acceleration in lower gears in the winter can be sometimes dissapointing ...

Quick review of Citroen ZX
A little over 2 years ago I bought my 2nd diesel ZX, an N plate, non turbo hatch with 172000 on the clock. The first one had been ultra reliable but really was past it's sell by date. I intended to keep the new one for a year, knowing that I would cover approximately 20000 miles. Now at approaching 50000 miles, and with nothing very much having gone wrong, I can't imagine ever wanting to part with it. OK, it has a few bumps and scratches, and the rear wiper has given up the ghost (It probably only needs the relay replaced,) but apart from a major brake reline, a couple of tyres, regular oil changes, and MOTs, it's never been off the road. People comment on it's odd looks, well so what? There aren't many cars that look perfect. Despite now heading for the quarter million mile mark, it doesn't burn oil, it is economical to a fault, over 60mpg on a run, and even 50+mpg on my 20 mile each way daily commute, partly on rural roads and partly in city traffic. When I do eventually change this car, I'm going to look no further than it's successor, the Xsara. If anyone is considering buying a medium sized used car for not a lot of dosh, this car is light years ahead of most of it's rivals ...

Review of Citroen ZX
Advantages: Economical to run and cheap to buy. Fairly fast. Good engine. Reliable. "Biodiesel ready". Disadvantages: A little noisy. Not fashionable.
...Why I bought the 1.9TD Citroen ZX ~
I bought this car because I do over 20,000 miles a year, and thought that I could save a fair bit of money by switching from a Petrol to a Diesel. I posted on a forum of car enthusiasts, asking what I should go for. I said I had £750 to spend on a Diesel and wanted reliability and economy above all else.
The responses were all on the same lines: buy a Peugeot 306 with an XUD9 engine, or a Citroen ZX with the ... ...paid about £700 for my Citroen ZX with 100k on the clock. This was a bit over the going rate, but I'd called up several other adverts for cheaper cars first, and they had all gone.
The price included 6 months MoT and 6 months Tax, plus £30 worth of fuel, so the price was not too bad. The condition of the car is really good and it drives like new still. It really does not show the miles and has been very well looked after.

The time had come to change the engine oil in my beloved CitroenZX 2.0 16v and needed to find a good oil to protect the engine. I set myself a budget of around £20- £25 and started my research for a worthy engine oil for my car.
FINDING A MOTOR OIL
My first port of call was my local car accessories shop 'Lively Motors' in Fulham (London) which recommended the brand Castrol for quality and Comma oil on price. The Castrol engine oil was far to expensive at £39.99 and the cheaper Comma oil although met all the specifications for my Citroen engine didn't interest me, perhaps it was because I had not heard of the brand before.
I phoned my local Citroen dealer in Chiswick (London) and they recommended a semi-synthetic engine oil which is part multi grade (mineral based) and part synthetic oil. The engine oil Citroen supply is ...
Advantages: fun, quick, economical Disadvantages: brakes not as good as they could be ?
I've had my D Turbo for 18 months now after changing from my CitroenZX (another good car). I'd moved to Diesel a few years ago after spending too much on petrol with my Golf GTi. The Citroen was a nice car to drive, but I wanted something with a bit more "poke". The D-Turbo is it ! It's quick, safe, reliable, has great handling and is economical.... what more do you want ?!?!?
I especially like the bucket seats and how comfortable yet supportive they are, just like my old Golf. The boot is big enough for the shopping runs or carting about lawnmowers, even with two people in the back. It might take a bit of getting used to after driving a petrol car, but believe me, after a few months you'll get used to the difference and love it !
It can be driven as slow or as fast (within reason !) as you like and is more suited to twisty ...
My mother bought a P-reg version of this car about 1 and a half years ago, and insured me to drive it as I could not (and still can't) afford a car (this is what University does to you).
After having driven only a Ford Fiesta 1.4 and a CitroenZX 1.4i, this car was a revelation. It is still relatively quick for it's class in terms of acceleration and top speed. Indeed, when you are cruising down the motorway in 5th gear, you feel that another gear would help because the engine is still pulling at 70 mph plus.
Allied to this, the seats are so comfortable that after a mid-distance drive or longer (30 miles plus) you feel that you could get out and have a cup of coffee then do the whole thing again.
Since my mother has possessed the car, it has not broken down on one occassion which is a far cry from her last car ...
