Hello dear Ciaonautes....as you so much appreciated my squiggles on my last Citroën BX review, i found some other pretty patterns to decorate this one, hope you like them!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
.......as i was saying in my previous review, i sold my Citroën BX for this "younger" car...a Citroën ZX.
Two years ago, I bought it for 2500€, that's around 1700pounds. There were 180 000kms on the clock, the car was 10 years old but in very good condition. I didn't hesitate to buy it as it was what i was looking for.
It's a diesel 1.9l break (estate) version. I wanted to buy this particular model for a few reasons;
~~ Estates are great for holidays with kids. The boot space is considerable, whilst the back seats are comfortable with lots of leg space. I'd be almost tempted to list what i got in there last summer holidays, but the list is way too long!
~~ This is
one of Citroëns most simple recent models...after a BX with loads of options and hydraulic system...i was desperate to get back to a "simple" vehicle. Electric windows and side mirrors is as far as the options go on this model. To me, this means less to repair, and therefore cheaper to run.
~~ Whilst the options are a strict minimum, the comfort is maintained. The seats are pleasant, even after a few hours of driving. The steering wheel is adjustable, which is additional comfort.
The engine is the same as in the Citroën BX or the Peugot 309. Therefore mechanically simple (compared to "plug in" modern cars). It consumes approximately 5 litres/100km. There is no hydraulic system on this Citroën model. However, as with the other Citroëns, it is a front wheel drive. I do regret not having power steering on mine though, is it requires a rather physical to get out of a small parking space.
The Citroën ZX first came out in 1991. Light (950kg) and not too large (1,70m), or long (4.07m), it's an economical little car. It became popular after a victory at the Dakar rally by Ari Vatanen. It was manufactured in Europe until 1998, when it was replaced by the Xsara. The ZX is still manufactured in China, called the Citroën "Fukang", and sold locally.
There are 4 petrol versions (reflex, Avantage, Aura and Volcane) and 2 diesels (turbo and Flash). It comes with 3 or 5 doors.
The only (big) hiccup i had.... a leak at the diesel injection pump....which cost me way too much to repair. Otherwise it's a very reliable car. Mine has a powerful battery which makes starting up guaranteed, even when it's frozen and that I've already tried 6 times. This is a real pleasure compared to my previous cars.
OK, I've finally decided that i will list what i took in my boot last summer, because i find it's quite spectacular ; here goes;
A caravan fridge! (60cm x 40cm x 50 cm) a 2-gas camping gas with a 6l gas bottle, 3 tents, sleeping bags and ruck sacks, 4 bicycles (two on a bike rack, and two on the roof!) a folding table, 4 folding chairs, two saucepans and a frying pan, a carton full of food and kitchen utensils, a ha-mac, a tarpaulin, a carton of car equipment (oil, jacks, starting cables, cooling liquid, etc) a water container (50cm x 40 cm x 30 cm) many games; badminton, boules, tennis rackets, a football, softball rackets and balls. four floor mats and thin mattresses, four blankets and pillows, and a huge bag of teddy-bears! and I'm sure I've forgotten a lot of stuff. ;-)
What's great when camping with this car is that with the hatch door open, you can use the boot as a kitchen (so that the wind doesn't blow on the gas cooker), then tie a tarpaulin to the roof rack and to a tree (for example) to make good shady space for the table and chairs, or a shelter for when it rains.
I'm hoping to keep this car as long as possible as i really appreciate it. It's big but compact at the time, and simple mechanically but comfortable. I admit that the diesel engine does make a lot of noise, but that's the normal diesel inconvenient.
In France the ZX was often used for Police cars. The photos added to this review come from the net.
Thanks for having read this! Squidge. ;-)
Advantages: Relatively cheap to buy, reasonable looking, good space, solidly screwed together Disadvantages: Utterly lacking in performance, main dealer service, started to become unreliable after 30k
