    Contrary to the anti-Ferguson prejudice with which I began this book, 'Civilization: The West and the Rest' is, for a relative ignoramus like myself, a highly enlightening historical analysis of Western civilization's dominance over the world since the 16th century - and its present stumbles. Ferguson's cockiness has drawn him dismissive publicity but his belief in history as the chaotic workings from which we must try and calculate the best future is his profound message.
